How to Paint a Room
The Complete Guide for Beginners
------
If you don’t know how to paint a room and are looking for help you have come to the right place.
------
If you have never painted a room before, or have tried once or twice and been frustrated, you are not alone….
Why Learn How to Paint a Room?
› First and foremost is to save money: it’s expensive to hire professionals. And you need to either stay home while they work or be able to trust them in your home.
› The personal satisfaction of seeing the results of your own work. Knowing that you did it yourself is very rewarding. Especially when the room ends up looking really nice.
› Once learned, it’s something you’ll know how to do for the rest of your life, and that you can pass on to others. It’s a useful skill-set to have.
All solid reasons, but what pops into your head when you think about painting a room? Any of these ring a bell?
⇒ Maybe you have a friend or relative who painted a room once, and you consider calling them up for help. And then you remember that they took forever to paint that room, the house was turned upside down for 3 weeks, and in the end the room didn’t even look so good.
⇒ How about a painting party? You’ll supply the food and drinks and your friends will do the work. On the other hand, none of your friends have much experience, some of your friends are rather lazy, and the rest are, well, somewhat challenged when it comes to reliability.
Plus, the group is liable to rack up a pretty big food and drink bill….
⇒ For a fleeting moment, maybe, you thought about getting kids to help. And then you remembered the definition of the word “help”.
⇒ You know you want to save the money by doing it yourself, but you’re thinking “I really don’t know what the heck to do” or “I tried painting before and it ended up a disaster.”
If any of these sound familiar, the How to Paint a Room ebook was written for you. It will give you the knowledge and confidence to do the work yourself, or with the help of one reliable person.
Getting informed is a wise first step because…
There are good reasons why people
are nervous about painting a room:
Where do I start?
In what order do I do things?
What tools do I need?
How do I fix those holes and cracks?
How do I keep everything from being a giant mess?
What paint finish should I use on the walls and trim?
What type of brushes and rollers are best for my situation?
How do I keep the job from taking forever?
What else do I need to know before I begin?
These are common questions
that anyone with no experience would logically ask.
So where do you get solid answers to your questions,
and find out what else you need to know?
There is a lot of information on the Internet.
Some of it is good, some of it is awful.
(How are you to know which is which?)
But the biggest problem for new painters
is incomplete information.
For example, what good is advice like
“Prepare the walls before painting”
if you don’t know what
“Prepare the walls” means.
Or how to do it?
Incomplete information is the biggest problem because
various, partial skills don’t add up to
understanding how to best paint a room from start to finish.
Knowing a little about one aspect of a larger project, while it may be helpful, doesn’t give you much of a handle on the rest of it.

How to Paint a Room: It’s a Process
Readers of How to Paint a Room know that I heavily stress the process of painting a room as key to a successful job.
What does this mean?
There are separate and distinct phases involved in every paint job. Getting the room ready, surface preparation, rolling, painting the trim and other steps are common and necessary to all room painting projects.
I take you through them in detail, and make sure that you understand the reasons for doing them in the correct order. Understanding the entire process means you can do the work systematically, in the most effective and efficient way possible.
This means that you will not be wasting time or having to redo work you’ve already done. How to Paint a Room was written to help you get your project done as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“Doing it yourself means you don’t have to pay a professional!”

I was you
30 some years ago I was a novice painter too, and I remember what it was like to tackle painting a room. In a word: intimidating. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I didn’t know enough to do it right, and how many basic things I still had to learn.
Nevertheless, I plowed ahead, making mistakes as I went. Of course, I learned over time but looking back, I realize now just how much time I wasted and how many things I was doing that were counterproductive.
— I often used the wrong tool or product
— Sometimes I used the right tool, but in the wrong way
— I’d complete an area and then realize I should have done another area first
— I painted the wrong type of paint over the existing paint
— I did a bad job fixing holes and cracks
— I struggled mightily with caulking
— I used cheap paint brushes and had no idea how much it was negatively affecting the final results.
— When I finally wised up and used the right brushes, I didn’t care for them correctly so they didn’t last. Which cost me money…
Anyway, the point is that I remember these mistakes and now understand how avoidable most of them were- if I’d only had a little more knowledge.
Over the years, through trial and error, associating with other painters, and experimenting, I’ve become very good at painting a room. I’ve now painted hundreds of rooms, and I wrote this book to share with you what I’ve learned.
------
“My goal is to spare you from what I went through
and make sure that you’re not intimidated or unclear
about what to do when you decide to paint a room.”
------
You may have noticed at this point that I’m not claiming that you will “paint like a pro!” The reason for that is simple: you’re not going to read this book and paint like a pro. Not. Going. To. Happen.
Like any trade or occupation, experience and repetition can only be learned and internalized over time. You can read a book on playing the guitar – and you can learn a lot – but you’re not going to play like Eric Clapton when you’re done reading.
But in the same way that Mr. Clapton could send a rookie on his way with a solid foundation, some good habits, and maybe some insider tricks, How to Paint a Room can do the same for you. I’m confident that if you read the book and watch the short videos, your painting project will go better and faster, and you’ll be happy with the results. (Videos? More on those further down…)
Another thing you may have noticed about this page is that it isn’t flooded with beautiful photos of beautifully painted rooms in beautifully appointed homes. Why? Well, what does that have to do with your apartment or home?
Most of us don’t live in places that look like magazine photos. We’re renting an apartment or house, or just trying to make the house we do own look better. To freshen it up or change the color, not turn it into high-gloss photo spread.
And let’s face it, it’s unlikely that those who own those beautiful rooms you see in the mags will be here looking for advice on doing their own work.
So… no fancy pics placed around to give you the impression that your room will look like something other than what it will actually be:
The same room, nicely painted.
What’s in How to Paint a Room?
This is a guide for beginners to re-painting a “normal” room . That is, a room that has been painted before, can be reached with no more than a step ladder and doesn’t involve, say, removing wallpaper or repairing large sections of old, crumbling plaster.
If you’re a novice, you shouldn’t start with painting kitchen cabinets or a room with a high vaulted ceiling or other tricky area. Start with something like a simple dining room or bedroom. When your skill level gets better, then you can branch out.
How to Paint a Room is a nuts and bolts guide to the actual, physical work of painting a room. I focus on what to do, in what order, and how to do it in the most efficient way possible.
Consequently, it doesn’t provide information on the following:
Picking colors, faux painting techniques, design tips, deck staining, exterior house painting, color washes, stenciling, murals, rag-rolling, pickling, or painting floors or fences.
Or roofs or bicycles, for that matter.
What is does do is give you solid, useful information on:
Getting the room ready to paint Knowing what tools you’ll need Your paint, primer, and finishes options Preparing the walls, ceiling and trim Painting the walls, ceiling, and trim
You Get In-Depth Assistance With:
♦ Giving yourself enough room to work, protecting your stuff, preventing catastrophes
♦ The tools you will need, with recommendations
♦ Determining if you have drywall or plaster walls, what products to use for patching, how to patch cracks and holes, best approaches to sanding, caulking and priming
♦ How to best clean up the room, your tools, and yourself. And when.
♦ Paints, primers and available finishes (flat, eggshell, etc.), with recommendations
♦ The best methods for both brushing and rolling
♦ How to avoid the most common mistakes that cost time and money
♦ And much more

” The book was written with the assumption
that you’re trying to get a room painted in your spare time,
when you’re not working your regular job, and that you want to get it done as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality.”

Regarding the cost of hiring a professional
According to an analysis of 27,427 cost profiles submitted by users of HomeAdvisorâ„ who hired professional painters:
“The cost to paint an average size room (10X12) ranges from $380-$790,
not including ceilings, trim or cost of the paint.”
The price range is large because pricing is subjective, and also varies greatly around the country.
But a couple of things are clear:
A 10×12 room is a small room: it will cost you even more than $380 (on the low end) to have just the walls painted in a larger room.
And the additional expense of paying a professional painter to also paint the ceiling and trim, plus the cost of the paint, is going to increase the price of having your room painted considerably. No matter where you live.
------
With the average cost to paint just the walls at over $500, it’s easy to see that you can save a lot of money by doing the work yourself. Anyone who has the physical ability and desire can do it- including you- and How to Paint a Room will give you the information and advice you need to paint a room efficiently and with beautiful results.
For less than 10% of the cost of having the walls painted in one small room, you can learn how to paint a room correctly and save yourself hundreds of dollars- not only on the project you currently have in mind, but for the rest of your life with every room you paint.
