8 years ago when I was 233 ugly pounds, I lost 30 pounds by listening to the so-called “gurus” who told me to “Eat less carbs”… and I listened.To my frustration, my fat loss came to a screeching halt.

I had been dieting for 16 weeks and had dropped 30 pounds of ugly fat just by upping my cardio, reducing calories and training hard. Progress was on track up until the final few weeks…
In the past this type of simple dieting had always worked for me, getting lean wasn’t an issue!
Well, clearly something was different in 2008! My metabolism was different, I wasn’t no 19 year old anymore with a naturally fast metabolism where I could just look at a treadmill and get shredded, my body wasn’t responding the same…
I stressed out – which probably raised my stress hormones (cortisol) and made it even harder to lose fat in the final weeks. Then, out of desperation, I looked to another so-called-guru to try and make up some ground and shed the last few pounds of fat and water weight.
It was a disaster… This so-called guru told me I need to “stimulate my metabolism” and start stuffing down massive amounts of carbs to “trick” my body and stimulate fat burning…
At this point I thought, something’s gotta work, let’s try it…
7 days out from the show I was up 7 pounds, he assured me this was just water weight and that we’d cut the carbs and then carb up again if needed…
What happened to make this story short? Well, I came out on stage looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy! Yep, round, soft, watered over and placed dead last in my division.
Horrible! Imagine how I felt when my family and friends are there watching me, or when the “former Musclemania champ” returns home and everyone wants to see pics and hear about how I did…
I wanted to totally give up on bodybuilding… I let down my friends and family…
Again, maybe you can’t relate – But it sucked!
But, you know what did come of this… A Learning Experience!
From that day forward I committed myself to Cracking The Carb Code once and for all! For me, my clients and for all those who wanted to get shredded, perform better or simply feel amazing!

The Hormone Insulin regulates the levels of sugar in your blood! When you eat a meal, the carbohydrates in that meal are broken down into glucose (a sugar used as energy by your cells). The glucose enters your blood. Your pancreas senses the rising glucose and releases insulin. Insulin allows the glucose to enter your liver, muscle, and fat cells. Once your blood glucose starts to come back down, insulin levels come back down too. This cycle happens throughout the day. You eat a meal, glucose levels go up, insulin goes up, glucose levels go down, and insulin levels go down. Insulin levels are typically lowest in the early morning since it’s usually been at least 8 hours after your last meal, basically after periods of fasting. After periods of fasting, post workout or bouts of low carb intake the body becomes insulin sensitive and is capable of increased uptake of glucose into the muscle cells.

If you’re an already Lean Athlete or a Lifter trying to gain muscle and get strong, then you need carbs and you’ll likely handle them better because you’re one of the “lucky ones”. Those with Higher Body-Fat Levels have poor insulin sensitivity. Sticking with the same diet doesn’t always work! It’s usually a bad idea. Your metabolic condition changes due to many factors. Age, your lifestyle, sleeping patterns, habits, daily activities, the list goes on… So you must adapt your diet accordingly. So then, how do we figure out our own individual tolerance, and what are the biggest factors that influence it? The following bullet points will help you figure that out.
Wow, that’s a lot to consider when you try and eat carbs, based on your body composition, workouts and goals…
..And right now I’m going to sum up the 3 most critical factors that takes this all into consideration
Are you just now beginning to clean up your diet? If so, you likely have a reduced tolerance to carbohydrates. Are you hungry shortly after eating a meal with carbohydrates? The rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels can leave you feeling hungry even though you just finished eating. Are you eating a diet high in carbohydrates but do little in the way of intense exercise? Carbohydrates are like high-octane fuel. They fuel high-intensity exercise and central nervous system function. If you feel like you have a calorie deficit yet you can’t lose any weight, you might have a carbohydrate intolerance. Are you trying to build maximum muscle mass? Eating lot’s of carbs everyday, even on non-training days, may be actually hindering your results over time. Are you a performance athlete? Such as a crossfitter, olympic lifter or sprinter? Then you’re probably training with high frequency, so, recovery will be key to keep up with best. Are you trying to figure out how to tweak carb-cycling? Training Frequency, Intensity, Type and Volume must all be considered for low – medium – high carb days for max performance, muscle gain and fast fat loss. How often are you training? 3, 5, 7 days per week or even doing doubles and training 12-14 times per week can be taxing,so adjusting your diet will be crucial to recover and have peak performance. Are you trying to increase your metabolism? Turning on your Fat Burning Switch and accelerating fat loss while gaining muscle mass at the same time can be tricky, knowing where and how to start can prevent wasting your time and efforts. Only eat carbs in the morning and after your workout.
Now I must say that this is at the top of my list for a reason! A one-size-fits all recommendation such as this doesn’t factor in your activity levels, your body composition or your physique and performance goals.
You need to consider the most opportune time to ingest carbohydrates for maximum glycogen uptake into the muscle, ensuring you don’t store fat!
To say yes, it’s best to eat your carbs in the am or post workout isn’t good enough…
…Say you’re 15% and I’m 10% body fat, we both just worked out real hard, but you trained legs (large muscle group) for 60 minutes, and I trained biceps (small muscle group) for 35 minutes. Do we need the same amount of carbs?

Eating Fats with Carbs slows down the digestion rate for less of an insulin spike.
For one, the absolute worst time to be ingesting carbs with fat is post workout! Insulin is a nutrient transporter, so why transport fat through the bloodstream when the muscle needs glycogen to be replenished?
With that being said, having high fat/carb meals in general is not a wise choice!

You can’t gain muscle on a low-carb diet.
YES YOU CAN! And no, it doesn’t just require shoving a bunch of acidic, ammonia- producing proteins down your throat. Instead, you’ll be adjusting to a high fat intake and some other critical dietary changes.
Again – We factor many variables such as your goals, current body composition and workouts into the program before you start!

A low-carb diet is the only way to get lean.
What’s considered low carb when you have a highly active individual or a sedentary office worker? Again, we must take into account your individual activity levels before putting you on a one-size-fits-all, low-carb diet.
Low carb diets can significantly lower body fat but they must be customized to the person so that you don’t run the risk of losing muscle, having poor performance or losing focus while at work. You need structure here that I’ll provide you with!

Tapering your carbs off towards the evening prevents fat storage.
But does it? This is a very old school way of thinking! I honestly used to tell my clients this back in the day (15 years ago) and maybe there was some decent logic to it. But again, that was generalized as a one-size-fits-all recommendation that didn’t work for everyone.
Catering your meals—and macronutrients within those meals—to your workouts, body composition and goals is a more optimal way of helping your body maximize energy, nutrient uptake, fat loss, muscle building and recovery.

1-2 grams of carbs per pound is ideal for building muscle
Hopefully by now you can see how general information isn’t enough! To say that 1-2 grams of carbs per pound body weight is best for a 220lb bodybuilder (a range of 220-440 grams) is a huge range and doesn’t consider how lean or fat the person may be to start.
If the person has a higher body fat percentage, they may need to cycle their carbs and calories to avoid excess fat gain which can lead to poor levels of testosterone, increased estrogen and insulin resistance.

Carb cycling should be 3 low carb days, 2 medium carb days and 2 refeed days.
Without knowing why or when to switch to a low, medium, high carb day that coincides with your goals, workouts your body composition is going to leave you very frustrated! You’ll be wondering why your body isn’t responding and losing fat, gaining muscle or seeing any noticeable changes!
