For the past 30 years I’ve been a professional writer and editor. Twenty years ago I published my first book, on my own, the long, hard, expensive way. On the printer’s advice, I had 1,000 copies printed, only to discover that I had to distribute copies to the bookstores myself! After months of footwork and selling just enough copies to cover my print costs, I gave up and vowed I’d never self-publish again!
Then ten years later, selling PDF e-books became all the rage. In 2011–12, I became a top-selling e-book expert, with six books on their own sales-page websites. I sold thousands of books, at a great profit, and I still get regular sales but, as you probably know, when sophisticated digital e-readers like Kindle came in, PDF ebooks went the way of the dinosaurs.
So when I first heard about the ‘speed and ease’ of creating print on demand (POD) and digital books, I though it was a miracle and was totally sucked in by the BIG MYTH that electronic DIY publishing was cheap, quick and easy.
