There are a number of people that have no access to a gym due to their rural location. That was me for many years.  I grew up in a rural area and maintained my weight and toned through physical labour and sports.  Then in my high school years my weight fluctuated going up in grade eleven and then down again in grade twelve.  The big change occurred in university where I gained more than the freshman fifteen. I gained thirty pounds over the course of four years and did not realize how big I was until I saw a picture of myself that blew me away.  How I didn’t realize I’m not sure?  I had survived on a diet of cheesy pasta and calorie laden coffees that caused my weight to balloon to a number I had never seen before.

After university I was off to the work force which took me to small town in Saskatchewan.  I didn’t know anyone and spent a lot of time walking, biking and doing exercises in my small apartment.  I did body weight exercises and with the combined light cardio and healthy eating started to drop the weight from my university years.

I was able to maintain my walking and at home workouts for several years in the small community even walking when it was -30 degrees Celsius outside.  My at home workouts involved very minimal equipment- a few small weights, stability ball and mostly body weight exercises.  In the comfort of my home I was able to build strength, and maintain a healthy weight.

At my workplace they initiated a wellness program that incorporated some challenges.  One challenge was a staff challenge where each staff member had to contribute up to sixty minutes per day of physical activity and all of the minutes were added up for the course of three weeks.  We then compared numbers with other work places who were part of the challenge and our workplace won.  Winning didn’t matter although I am quite competitive.  It was the team aspect and contributing to the team.  All the minutes were recorded in the staff room for all to see and there was no way I was not contributing my sixty minutes per day.  Those three weeks were the kick start to a new me.

I then joined a women’s soccer team in a neighbouring small city for a social outing.  We were always short players which often meant no subs and playing ninety minutes straight.  It was fun as it was a new experience for me having never played soccer before.  After two months of playing I made a trip to my parents to visit.  My dad commented that my pants were going to fall off and it was then I realized that I had toned and reshaped my lower body from all of the soccer.  Obviously I was never one to spend a lot of time on the scale or measuring- I hadn’t even noticed.

My job took me to other small communities where I chose to walk and do my at home routine to maintain being healthy and strong.  Then I ended up in a small city.  The walking continued till winter hit and with less daylight hours my walks in the dark were not feeling very safe.  I then took my first step into a gym but only to take a class, not to use the machines.  This class atmosphere was a whole new world again.  And I loved it!  I eventually progressed to working out in the gym and became so interested in the gym world that I changed careers and became a personal trainer.

After three years I opened my own facility, Double Shift Conditioning.  This training centre was class based and included personal and small group training. I wanted to create an atmosphere of accountability and a sense of community among my clients.   A strong Double Shift family of clients was created and they saw results as their attendance was consistent and we offered a huge variety of classes and qualified trainers.

Going to a gym or fitness center is not for everyone.  There are many reasons that people do not work out.  We are surrounded by many small communities who do not have access to workout facilities.  Also many people do not have access to a gym due to their work schedule or their family situation.  There are many reasons and they are not excuses.  It’s life.  However I know I managed years of staying in shape with my at home workouts and that many others can do it too.

That’s what inspired me to help create at home workouts that are easy to use.  They require minimal space, minimal equipment and minimal time.  They are designed to produce results and create or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Sadly I had to close the doors to my facility after six successful years due to an injury that happened while coaching hockey.  While I was in a cast for three months I had lots of time to create the at home workouts.  And now I am back to being one of the many people who work out at home on a regular basis.  I am still limited by my injury but it is not an excuse.  I am able to still work out, modifying exercises as needed.  I understand the benefits of working out at home.
