 Hi, I’m Karianne.

 

I used to have huge stress related issues. It started progressively. My mind was never clear. I was always thinking of something I had to do. I wasn’t able to enjoy my time spent with my friends and family. My grades went down (I was a student at that time) and I had issues being productive. I was tired all the time, no matter how much I slept!

 

I started avoiding going out with my friends at all cost to try and get some rest. My body was always tense (tell me, is your body really relaxed right now?) and my head wasn’t even resting on the pillow at night.

 

The stress suddenly became worst and worst by the day! I became afraid of driving, afraid to do the groceries, afraid to get out of my house. I started having panic attacks at any given time of the day, out of nowhere. My life was a mess and I ended up not being able of doing anything, stressed out and unhappy. My relationship started to live more and more fights, I started getting sick more often, eating less (or more sometimes!), having blank memory problems and even aggressive thoughts.

 

Heck, I even started to be more impulsive and wasted my time and money on things that did not help me at all! Doctor prescribed me his ”Bottle of Help”, pills that did nothing but making a walking zombie.

 

Now, I’m more happy than ever and I know stress will never ever be an issue for me anymore. Why? Because I’ve stumbled upon something I’m going to share with you today.

How to Break Down Your Stress to Get Rid of It

 

When most of us are stressed, it is for a reason. We are stressed for instance because of our work, because of a deadline or because of debt. Knowing what is causing the stress helps us to at least contextualize it and gives us hope that someday we might escape its clutches, but for many of us that is not enough.

But if you break that stress down further and if you really get to know it, then you might just find that it starts to come apart and that it becomes much more manageable.

Make Your Stress Smaller

 

The trick is to break down your stress into specific things – into manageable chunks that you can deal with – and then to deal with the constituent parts.

So let’s take a look at one of the biggest culprits: work. If your main stressor is work, then chances are that you can break this down further to identify precisely what it is about work that stresses you out. Here are some examples of aspects of our jobs that make us stressed:[]
Looming deadlines Angry bosses Unpleasant colleagues Uncomfortable workspaces Busy, long commutes Things you would rather be doing Wearing work clothes Making calls Speaking in public Having too much to do
 

 

All these things can make us feel stressed about our jobs and most likely there are a number of these things playing on your mind.

But now you’ve broken it all down and you know the specifics, you should find it becomes much easier to start dealing with the problems individually.

So for instance: if you have a colleague you don’t like, you could ask to be moved to another part of the office. Likewise, if your workspace is uncomfortable, you could speak to HR about getting a new chair, or you could put a plant on your desk. Don’t like the long commute? How about looking into a lift share, or finding an alternative route. Workload too big? Then again, speak to someone and ask to have it shared!

Likewise, you might find that other ‘big’ stresses in your life can be made easier when you break them down into their smaller constituents. Stressed about debt? Then perhaps one aspect of that is not being able to afford things – in which case writing a budget could help. Another aspect could be worrying about your credit score, in which case you could talk to your bank manager or a debt adviser.

 

 

How Does Stress Affect Health?

 

The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked and stress-related tension builds.
 

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress — a negative stress reaction.

 
Forty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints. Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma,arthritis, depression, and anxiety. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace. Stress costs American industry more than $300 billion annually. The lifetime prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50%, often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions.

Why Pills Will Never Solve Your Stress Issues

 

Medication can relieve some of the symptoms of anxiety, but it doesn’t cure the underlying problem and it’s usually not a long-term solution. Anxiety medications also come with side effects and safety concerns, such as the risk of addiction.

 

Many different types of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including traditional anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines, and newer options like antidepressants and beta-blockers.

These medications can be very effective, but they shouldn’t be thought of as a cure. Anxiety medication can provide temporary relief, but it doesn’t treat the underlying cause of the anxiety disorder. Once you stop taking the drug, the anxiety symptoms often return in full force. Often, you’ll have to keep taking more and more pills to keep the effects stable.

 

It’s important to be aware of the risks of anxiety medication, too. Anxiety medication can cause a wide range of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. Many medications for anxiety are also habit forming and physically addictive, making it difficult to stop taking them once you’ve started.

 

Pills are a great way to put a temporary stop to the effects of your stress – only on the surface. While they can help you get through your stress issues, they need to be accompanied by efforts on your end. Pills will never take away your stress and anxiety issues like reading a simple book or going to taking a walk can. People often fall back to pills because they don’t know where to start or because they don’t think they can solve their issues.

 

Now that you know this, don’t fall for that trap! You can and you will solve your stress issues if you take some easy and quick steps. These will benefit you immensely and quickly like no pills could ever do.
