SCIENTIFIC FACT No. 1:

In one study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (1) the researchers found that people gain approximately one pound during the Holidays, and another, more recent study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2) found that the weight gain is actually around 780 grams or 1.72 pounds.


The one from the story? That was me.

It's just what I told you before, I LOOOVE food. And the Holiday food is SO delicious! So many special dishes that we only have this time of the year... I wouldn't miss that even if I was nuts.

The problem with the Holiday meals is that they are indeed extremely delicious, but also very fattening. They're loaded with excess fat, flours and sugar. No wonder we end up bloated and heavier than ever after the Holidays.


Maybe 1.72 pounds won't seem like a lot, but research shows that the extra weight you gain in December is not lost during the following 10 months. And at a pace of two extra pounds a year... you can do the math.

But my round face said it all. And those thighs... there was no hiding them.


But you know what? It wasn't my fault. I mean, how could I restrain myself from eating all those yummy dishes during the Holidays? I love eating! Plus, everybody was eating and enjoying dinners, family lunches, eating out with friends, drinking... I would be a masochist if I didn't do it.


And with all the dinners, desserts, next day leftovers, staying late and everything else, no matter how much I danced myself to sweat at the parties, my New Year's gift was a couple extra pounds on the scale.


And there I went again in January with the number one New Year's resolution in the whole world: lose weight.









SCIENTIFIC FACT No. 2:

According to a study from the University of Scranton, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology (3), 45% of the population makes New Year's resolutions almost every year. However, 92% of people never get to accomplish their resolutions, and 1 in 3 people abandon their goals as soon as within the first 4 weeks of the year.


It is only logical, don't you think? If we were already overweight and we add extra pounds in December, we're doomed to dieting slavery, we're forced to start a new diet every January.



But, since we fail to stick to it, we just keep on adding the pounds the rest of the year.

Holiday weight gain accounts for one quarter of your total weight gain for the whole year.

Or, put another way, in December we get fatter than in three whole months combined.

So, if we slowly put on some weight throughout the year, say, 5 pounds, and in December we add another 2 pounds to that, then we'll start the next year with about 7 pounds of extra weight.


Repeat that for two or three years and we're easily getting to 20 pounds of excess weight. And I'm not even counting every failed dieting attempt which usually makes us regain all the weight we manage to loose - and then more. And the fact that, as the years go by, we tend to store more and more fat and it gets harder and harder to get rid of it.


PROBLEM No. 2:
If you don't lose the weight BEFORE the Holidays, it's more likely that you'll lose control with your eating


Being overweight is much worse than just looking horrible in the mirror.

When you're overweight or obese, your hormones are out of balance, and your appetite is out of control.


But that's not all...

In the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition study, the researchers found that those who were obese at the beginning of the study gained the most weight. They also had a significant increase in their body fat percentage.


In plain English: the more overweight we get to the Holidays, the heavier and fatter we'll be in January.

Being happy means to celebrate with your loved ones, to enjoy each and every moment (including the meals), and feeling good in your own body.


And this is not a vane issue. Because when we don't like how we look we can't wear the clothes we want, we're self-conscious and constantly thinking that everything will make us fat, we have low self-esteem and we're not really free to enjoy every moment.


Luckily, not all is lost...


I was like that before. Relaxing a little bit and enjoying the Holidays meant that I would get into the new year with several extra pounds, and that got me back to an endless spiral of diets, low self-esteem, cravings, stress and lack of control.
