I later decided to try focusing on my diet. I tried atkins as well as many other similar variation of the low carb diet fad.

Feeling good about my "success," I took a weekend off to indulge in some carbs, but I'm pretty sure you can guess what happened next. I regained the 10lbs back plus 5 more over a single weekend!
So diet and exercise weren't really working for me like I had hoped so I decided the next step.

I had to stop because I had trouble sleeping at night and the headaches weren't very fun.

This couldn't be healthy.
I regained most of the weight back.
This was the cycle of of my weight loss life. Jumping from exercise program to diet program to trying various diet supplements. It was never ending. I've tried almost every popular diet out there.
I even went on the Paleo Diet.
I jumped on the paleo bandwagon with my wife back in 2011 and we kept it up for a year. For a time, it was great. I remember when I was really into the whole paleo thing - I felt like I was the gluten avenger.
In hindsight it had its place in my journey but I was a poor example to my family. I always either "hot" or "cold" about exercise and nutrition.
That's what I was most embarrassed about.
I have 3 young beautiful children. The example I was being, I'm sure you would agree, was unacceptable. I was teaching them my unhealthy relationship with food.
I was being a hypocrite.
I would be saying bread is bad for you, but let my kids eat it. I would say pasta makes you fat, but it was okay for my children to eat mac & cheese?
Sometimes I was on track and other times I would be totally off and eat whatever I was craving that moment.
It's a difficult thing being a parent. We do these things to ourselves to be "healthy," lose fat and feel better - but in reality the Yo-Yo diet philosophy was not healthy.
Yeah sure, I was succeeding with losing weight - but I didn't eat breakfast with my family because the diet I was following didn't allow me to eat breakfast.
How are my kids going to learn to eat healthy and balanced if I'm not the example.
In truth, I was the example, a terrible example.
There had to be another way
That's when I had this "breakthrough" which I wasn't able to fully understand until recently.
Here's what happened.
I was on track, dialed in and eating great. I was exercising hard and losing weight. One day after a hard workout session, someone at the gym happened to bring some donuts.
The diet program I was following at time didn't allow for eating breakfast, and I was hungry. I figured that I had been good and deserved a treat; plus I couldn't remember the last time I had a doughnut. So I told myself I would just have one.
Have you ever told yourself this?
"I'll just have one."
Well I'm sure you can pretty much guess what actually ended up happening.
One doughnut quickly became four donuts. (I don't recommend this)
Eating junk food is something you never forget to do, it's like riding a bike. Once you learn how, you never forget.
I manage not to feel guilty and eat normal the rest of the day. I had my normal protein salad for lunch and a low carb dinner.
But What happens next was interesting.
I woke up the follow day feeling amazing. I had energy you couldn't believe. My weight only went up a 1 pound (not too bad).
I got back on track with my nutrition plan as normal and had one of the best workouts I've ever had that afternoon. I was strong, the weights moved faster and I did more reps. I was even able to do cardio afterwards, something I rarely have the energy and motivation to do.
That's when the light bulb went off. All my knowledge and years of experiencing dieting and coaching others "clicked," of what people were doing wrong.
