The Seniors Golfing Guide - Reclaim Your Youthful Prowess!

FELLOW GOLFERS...

"_NEVER_ IN MY LIFE HAVE I EXPERIENCED ANYTHING SO DIFFICULT
AS ASKING A MAN OVER 20 YEARS
MY SENIOR, IF I COULD MARRY HIS DAUGHTER AFTER HE\'D JUST
_DESTROYED_ ME IN A ROUND OF GOLF."

But let me back up to the beginning of the story

From: Kevin O'Shea

Chicago, IL

_TEN YEARS BACK..._
Back to a time when Margaret was 'just' my girlfriend.

An aspiring engineer, I played golf fairly often with Marge's father
Jack. Maybe that's why we get along so well... Our shared passion for
the game... The long, lazy days of summer spent sharing course with
the sun on our backs, cigars in our mouths and nothing but the sky,
the course, and the ball on our minds.

Often, we'd leave the cart back at the clubhouse and walk the course
together, talking as we went. That was how I got to know my future
father in law. And where I discovered how cool a guy he was!

I was in the prime of my life, though not quite at the top of my
golf game. Jack had always been the type to play a few rounds with
colleagues from work or his regular foursome at the country club, but
he'd learned the sport in a different time. Back when a ball's
compression number meant something, the reigning king was Nicklaus,
and the game truly was 'simpler'.

He had about thirty years on me, but Jack was a sport and he never
seemed to mind losing to me We had an unspoken agreement that I was
younger, had the edge, along with the latest in golf technology; so we
just enjoyed the heart of the game together. Meeting up with Margaret
and her mother after the game for dinner on the Connecticut beach,
we'd never discuss stroke counts or who 'won'.

Jack and I, viewed our friendly games not as a competition, but as a
shared struggle to betterr our own game. If I showed improvement or
hit a few particularly good rounds, we'd both boast about it. If Jack
sank a particularly difficult putt, that would dominate the after-game
discussion. But I'd like to believe that we both knew I won because I
was the better golfer (he might have something to say about that, when
he reads this ;-).

CHANGE IN THE AIR...

I'd been out of state for three months, closing a business deal in
the city where Margaret was finishing her graduate thesis in European
Art History. We were both looking forward to the summer vacation, we'd
be spending together at the beach house her parents owned. Lord knew,
we both needed the break and I was excited about the chance to get
back on the course without the pressures of work engulfing me.

Margaret knew I was looking forward to playing with her Dad, but she
didn't know I was anticipating the next game so much more than usual.

I'd bought the ring, and had already proposed. The only thing left
was to ask Jack for his daughter's hand. Her family was just
old-fashioned enough to respect such gestures, and I knew it mattered
to her. Since we'd gotten to know each other as men on the golf
course, I couldn't think of a better place to ask him to be my
father-in-law.

I really should have seen _it_ coming when I saw Jack that weekend.
He was looking a bit more tanned, and it was apparent that he'd been
losing some weight. Was it my imagination or was his grip a bit firmer
when I shook his hand, his gaze more confident when I looked him in
the eye?

_I PUT IT DOWN TO THE JITTERS _

After knowing him for so long, and playing so many rounds as equals
(personally, if not physically), surely it was natural for me to be a
bit intimidated asking this man for his blessing on my proposal.

The sun was already high in the sky on a crisp Connecticut
afternoon, 8 holes through a course of 18. By now, I should be eight
or nine strokes ahead, a lead that should easily grow over the next
ten holes, but Jack's form stayed solid and his drives didn't lose
their distance over the back nine like they usually did.

Who was this golf powerhouse, and what did he do
with 'Good Ol' Jack'?!?

As much as we enjoyed our talks, I could usually tell the long walks
took something out of Jack. Proud Irish men that we were, the idea of
me suggesting we take a cart would have been an insult to his manhood.
So, Jack would play on, gamely deflecting my growing lead by deriding
the new technology that was "spoiling the game." Today
however...Something was very, very different.

His drives had more distance. His form was clean. I was STRUGGLING
to maintain a slim two stroke lead, and Jack was about to beat par on
the ninth hole. That's when it dawned on me.

_I WAS IN TROUBLE..._

I won't bore you with the humilating details of how I awkwardly
congratulated him on beating me silly, before I turned to the other
topic on my mind. He looked at me knowingly, and I knew I'd be okay...
Even if I was the one eating humble pie that night.

Over dinner that evening, Jack put off telling Marge's mother about
our discussion until after he had regaled one and all with a brilliant
description, pantomime and all, of the look on my face when he birdied
the 18th hole to take the game.

To this day, I'm not sure which result her mother was more excited
about... Planning her daughter's wedding, or laughing at the
humiliation I'd suffered by her husband's hand.

Later that night Jack and I sat, Irish whisky's in one hand,
Montecristo's in the other, listening to the waves crashing on the
beach while Margaret showed her ring off to the friends who had
collected at our impromptu engagement party on the beach.

I asked him what he changed to pull of the upset. Did he finally
succumb to the new technology, get a new ball? Hire a coach? In reply,
Jack just winked. And said such knowledge was unfit for a man of my
youth, but once his daughter and I had our tenth anniversery he'd
share all the details over a round of golf.

FAST FORWARD...

It's been over ten years since his promise, and recently when Jack
came to visit his grandkids I made certain we set aside some time for
an eighteen hole game at our favorite club just outside Chicago.

As we reached the first hole, and I opened my mouth to remind Jack
of his promise, he grinned at me and said "I know why we're here".

Those eighteen holes were some of the most memorable of my life. I
frantically scribbled notes on the legal pad I'd brought along, barely
even noticing the 3 stroke lead he was carrying all the way to the
12th hole. But, that's when he made his fatal mistake... He told me
the REAL secret behind that fated game, and by the 18th hole I was
carrying a solid 4 stroke lead myself.

Kevin,
I'd say "you've done it again" but that would be grossly
underestimating your new book. _The Senior Golfer's Blackbook_ is an
absolute joy to read, and though I'm not quite to the SPGA age level,
I learned SO many things reading through it, that I'm really in shock!

As you know, the lower your score, the harder it is to lower it
further.... What you SHOULD know however, is that after reading your
book I went out to my local links and played one of the best games of
my life.

I'm recommending your book to my readers, tell your father-in-law
thank you for the wisdom he shared, and for letting me win that _one_
game..

Hope To See You Again Soon,

Jack Moorehouse
