Getting back to Scrawny Johnny….

John hated his life.

From Boy To Man




After 6 months Johnny looked super buff. But he had a long way to go, and his progress really slowed down…

After the first 6 months of weight training, “newbie-ness” vanishes, progress slows, and it takes way longer to make strides. Most people get frustrated at that point and give up.

Johnny discovers power (or lack thereof)







Johnny body-built like crazy through college. He was happy, confident, and comfortable with his weight-lifting numbers. Then one day at the gym, he saw a guy do what he THOUGHT was impossible.

He was about Johnny’s height, weight, and size, and Johnny expected him to lift around the same as Johnny…more or less….

But it wasn’t LESS. It wasn’t even MORE. It was INSANELY MORE.

But you could not do BOTH. And he settled for looks…

On that fateful day at the gym, this Herculean figure made Johnny realize he’d made a massive mistake his whole life!

Johnny felt like a fraud. He wasn’t Brawny Johnny after all. He was merely “Look-Like-Brawny” Johnny. Ouch.

From Man to Beast




At first Johnny was in denial. Hercules must be a fluke, a freak of nature, an aberration, he could not be replicated.

Maybe it was dumb luck?

But Johnny looked around and noticed others ripped just like him, who could seriously outlift him.

He searched Google, and discovered lots of powerlifters who had awesome physique. The two were not mutually exclusive, as he had been led to believe all these years.

Johnny was tempted to figure this out alone. After all, he was a professional-grade weightlifter, a true master. He could certainly learn to lift for power…right?

Then Johnny decided it was arrogance and ego. He needed to approach Hercules and get some advice, no matter how painful. He swallowed his pride and asked for guidance.

Hercules turned out to be named Aaron (his soon-to-be mentor), and he was a really nice guy.

The big myth about powerlifting







As I mentioned earlier, Johnny is in fact based on ME. Okay, I may have changed a few details, but I went through all the same stages he did. I was a pitiful dweeb, a total weakling with zero confidence. I put on muscle and gained confidence.

Then I befriended Hercules and learned how to lift for power like I never dreamed possible.

Best of all, I discovered something that is will revolutionize BOTH the world of weight training and powerlifting…

In fact, the revolution has begun…

People think you need two separate regimens, and twice the time to achieve optimal body and strength.

It turns out that’s a complete fallacy.

When I went through the “Scrawny Johnny” phase as freshman in high school I could barely bench 115 pounds.

By senior year using bodybuilding principles, I managed to get my bench up to 300 pounds. Sure, it felt nice, but I wanted more.

I was stuck at 300 pounds for a whole year before finally getting up to 315.

I knew there was NO WAY I could get a bigger bench without changing something so I really stepped my game up and trained smarter as a bodybuilder.

My bench press BLASTED up to 365 pounds. This was the beginning of the “Brawny Johnny” phase for me (you may have had your own “Brawny Johnny” phase as well).

I plateaued for almost a year here until I met Hercules (aka Aaron) who pulled me into the world of powerlifting and the rest was history.

Powerlifting Demystified…







I confess, I used to be skeptical about powerlifting. Sure, I wanted more strength and power, but I was not prepared to revamp my lifestyle, terrified of shifting away from body building. An amazing physique was the coveted prize I spent years shooting for, and I was (and still am) proud of my body, and not prepared to let go.

But in reality, I did not give up one single thing.

I have the same body. Even better. And now I have the strength and power to go with the muscle. In fact, the methodology and techniques I discovered through powerlifting actually IMPROVED my bodybuilding.

To be honest, even if it didn’t give me incredible strength, I’d still do powerlifting techniques, for all the amazing side benefits.

Everyone has different natural builds that react differently to diet and exercise. Endomorphs are stockier – and good at lifting. Where as ectomorphs make excellent long distance runners.
