Introduction to Change

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it,
move with it, and join the dance.”
Alan Watts

Change is not something that many of us think we want in our lives, be it the kind that knocks at our door unexpectedly, or the kind we try to bring about. We often expect our lives to remain just the way they are right now. A few of the most common events where we are most likely to experience change include:
Moving to a new house Starting a new job Change in relationship status

One of the main reasons behind this thought process is our perception of ‘change’. Change is often associated with feelings of insecurity and a sense of being unsettled, making us naturally resistant to change in any form.

“Your life lessons are brilliant! They answered questions I never thought I had in years. Lesson number 7 goes straight through my soul. I felt worried almost all the time but it calmed me down and convinced me to let go of excess baggage in my life and enjoy myself a little bit more everyday. At first, it was hard for me not to worry especially when it came to money. But I drafted a plan based on the steps you mentioned. Now I know I am on my way to a better financial future and I can finally sleep peacefully after years of going to bed feeling anxious!”

Let’s first try to figure out a few of the key reasons for our inbuilt resistance to change:
CAUSE REASON Fear of the Unknown The level of uncertainty looming around the nature of change, instability in what is currently happening, and lack of knowledge about what the future holds. Loss of Control Feeling that a change may lead to a loss of control over your life and that it will, to some degree, affect your decision-making powers. Loss of Competency Feeling that your current abilities will be compromised. Lack of Confidence A lack of personal conviction that change can genuinely be for the better. Reluctance to Change Habits Change often involves taking us out of our comfort zone. Why change what makes us feel safe?
“I’m not a book worm but honestly, your book struck a cord! I’ve been a nurse for 5 years now. I’ve been going to work everyday doing overtimewhenever I can at the hospital, thinking that working hard would put more food in the table and make life easier. Everyday, I witness new babies born and old people die. That has been my life for several years. Your book made me realize that while I’m taking care of other people’s lives, I have been forgetting to take care of mine. I have taken my happiness for granted. Don’t get me wrong, it is actually an honor to help people who need me. But for a long time now I forgot to enjoy the moment. After reading your life lessons, I decided to book a flight to Bali next month. I believe I deserve to enjoy life and not just work hard to have something to eat everyday. I am looking forward to that small vacation and my family is so excited that they are already planning what they’ll bring to the trip! Thank you so much.”

With our aversion towards change we easily forget that change is not always like a tsunami that sweeps over us, leaving our life almost unrecognizable to how it was before. We are forever making small changes in our life and our daily routines, but because they are small we don’t seem to recognize them as us ‘changing’. These would include:
Deciding to take a 15 minute walk along the beach every day Buying a new outfit Getting our hair cut Finding time to take the kids to the park once a week

In the above mentioned scenarios we don’t see any of that as change, but more we see it as simply making a decision. However here we are going focus on the changes that we deliberately and consciously want to bring into our lives so that we can move forward in a positive way to realize our hopes and dreams. It is amazing to realize the power that dreams hide within themselves. It is even more exciting to discover how they hold the key to a successful and peaceful life. Because we are so busy rushing from A to B we seldom have the time to notice, let alone appreciate the amazing powers we hold within.

We don’t engage with these powers as we make our journey through life because we don’t understand the power dreams have to affect our goals and hopes. In other words, in our rush to get somewhere in our lives, we have forgotten how to discover the magic that dreams hold and we can feel clueless as to where to focus our energy, other than on our day-to-day responsibilities. However those of us who take time to understand all this tend to become real achievers and are more fulfilled with life.
