Did you know that 30% of the world’s population will suffer from an anxiety disorder or panic attack at some point in their life! That’s 1 out of every 3 people!

And what about people who “suffer in silence”?

Those of us who:

Don’t even think they have an issue – they just believe it’s just who they are, or just the way they are!Don’t go to the doctors about it, for fear there may be something much worse wrong with them!Feel like there’s something wrong with them, because they feel unable to cope! Just get on with it – because this is just the way it is!Think panic and anxiety are just a part of modern day living.Don’t admit they have panic attacks for fear that people may think that there’s something wrong with them!

Let’s face it, anything to do with the mind, scares most of us, doesn’t it? Even the medical profession have only begun to scratch the surface in relation to research about the mind and exactly what it’s capable of.

Let’s just clarify some of the misconceptions:

PANIC ATTACKS ARE NOT:

something that you have to managea mental health issuealso having panic attacks does not mean that you’re losing your mind!

Symptoms of Panic Attacks

The symptoms of panic attacks can be so intense - that it’s plain to see why we may be concerned for our general health and well-being.

IN THE MIND:

Feeling worried all the timeFeeling tiredUnable to concentrateFeeling irritableSleeping badlyFeeling depressed

IN THE BODY:

Fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations)SweatingFace goes paleDry mouthMuscle tension and painsTremblingNumbness or tingling in fingers, toes or lipsBreathing fastDizzinessFaintnessIndigestionPassing water frequentlyNausea, stomach crampsDiarrheea

Having a panic attack can be so intense and debilitating!

Panic attacks can start, completely out of the blue!

The first panic attack can completely freak you out because you have no idea what’s happening to you.

A panic attack can be so intense that you sometimes feel like you are going to die.Sometimes people actually go to the Hospital because the intensity is so strong they think they may be having a heart attack!

You start feeling panicky, dizzy, pressure in your chest, shortness of breath, hyperventilating and feeling like you want to run.

You body is going into the “fight or flight” response, as your body perceives that it is in danger – as if you’re being chased by a bear!

Your symptoms are actually your body’s way of protecting you from this perceived danger.  Although it certainly won’t feel like it!

What are the causes of panic attacks?

So what causes us to start having panic attacks in the first place?

Although the exact causes of panic attacks and panic disorder are unclear, the tendency to have panic attacks can run in families. There also appears to be a connection with major life transitions such as graduating from college, starting a new job, getting married, having a baby, moving house. Times of severe stress can also be enough to trigger a panic attack, such as, the loss of a loved one, divorce, or losing your job.

Usually there is a pattern to anxiety and panic attacks; they are seldom random and are often accompanied by some form of stress or depression.

How to Stop Panic Attacks

So how do we actually stop panic attacks?

If you’re anything like me, before I started to look for a real solution, I didn’t even know that the way I was feeling was an issue, I just thought it was ME!  I just thought it was part of who I was!

Panic is a learned response, it is a pattern of behaviour – something which you’ve learned to do automatically in response to certain circumstances, situations or events in your life.

And the best part is that you can change this pattern of behaviour.  You can overcome panic attacks!

So who am I and why should you listen to me?

Hi

My name is Barbara Smiles

I suffered with anxiety and panic attacks for almost10 years. I can honestly say that those 10 years were the most stressful years of my life – so I suppose I should have realised that something was bound to give!

My life - during those 10 years:

I went through a divorceMoved house twiceChanged my jobWas studying for my professional qualificationsHelped nurse my mother at home for 2 years when she was diagnosed with cancerMy mother passed away in 2007

If I’d only known about the causes and symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks, at the time, I would have been inclined to do something about it.

I can honestly remember thinking to myself at the time:

“Well, this is obviously just the way I am in stressful situations.”“This is just who I am.”“Maybe I’m just a weak person.”“Yeah it’s tough but nobody’s life is easy, is it?”“There’s no use complaining you just have to get on with it.”

All the other family members seemed to be coping so well, nursing mam and everything – I didn’t want to let them down.  What the hell was wrong with me? I just had to keep it together.  I had to get a grip!

Enough IS Enough!

The final straw came for me when I experienced my worst ever panic attack.

I was sitting one of my final exams. I was literally sitting with a 3 hour exam paper on the desk in front of me – we’d been given the cue to start – and I could barely remember my name – my mind had gone totally blank!!!

I was hyperventilating, was in a cold sweat, had palpitations and my heart was beating so hard, I thought it would break through my chest!!!

After 15 minutes of what felt like pure torture – I decided “I just couldn’t do it.”  So I handed my paper in and left the exam hall.

I remember crying in the car on the way home - I was just so annoyed and frustrated with myself.  After all the effort I’d put into studying for this exam – it should have been a walk in the park!  I’d really let myself down BIG STYLE this time!

And then, as per usual, the negative self-talk started...

“What am I going to tell my colleagues at work on Monday” they’ll think I’m such a loser!!“I feel like such a fool!”“I feel so embarrassed”“I’ve really let myself down”

And many, many, more besides – but I’m sure you get the picture.

On and on this went for 3 whole days over the weekend - the endless stream of negative self talk – making me feel even more anxious.

When Monday morning came, I’d wound myself up into such a frenzy that I was tempted to call in sick!  But decided against it – knowing I would only be delaying the inevitable.

And after all that worrying and stress – it really was no big deal!  My colleagues were actually very supportive.

So I’d worried for 3 whole days about this, blowing it up out of all proportion and for what?

That’s it “I’ve had enough” – I’m not letting this anxiety dictate my life any longer!

What I really wanted to find, was something that was really simple and effective.  And after quite a bit of research I came across this super SIMPLE   technique that not only works like a charm – it literally eliminates the symptoms of panic within MINUTES!

Enough about me though!
