How To Make EDM Music

An EDM Production Course for Beginners!

Posted on [December 24, 2014January 7, 2015] by [Robbie]

“How can I make my own instruments from scratch?” Most presets that comes with the synthesizers and music-editing softwares don’t provide the sounds I’m looking for. How can I create a sound that I have in my mind?

“Why does my music sound weak?” I have followed the instructions on the YouTube tutorials and other sources, but there’s not enough energy. How can I improve my music so that even I would want to dance to it?

“Can I see the entire process of producing a song from start to finish?” I need to see the whole picture to understand how all the instruments work together. I have always read about it, but have never seen it in action.

“I’m on a tight budget.” I don’t have my own recording studio or high-end equipment. Can I still produce quality music from my laptop?

“Where’s the support?” If only there was somebody that can give me an answer, even a quick “yes or no”, which will save me hours of trying to figure it out on my own.

The very first time I went to an electronic music festival was when I was 18. I had never seen so much energy and so many people dancing to the same rhythm. A month after that, I downloaded my first music editing software. I had to borrow a keyboard from my school because I couldn’t afford a MIDI keyboard at that time. Like many beginning producers, my music didn’t sound right; something always felt missing. I was waiting for that “Aha!” moment, which eventually did come two years later. Then things really started to click in my mind, and the process really started to become clear. But I’m the type of person that believes – time is the most valuable thing, and two years was a very long time for me.

That is why I created this course on how to make EDM music. I wanted to address all the struggles and frustrations I had during those two years. Creating a course that I would have picked to help me through my concerns as a beginner.

I want to provide you with the knowledge I didn’t have as a beginner. My goal is to have a clear direction for you to follow that will save you a lot of time and frustration.

I cannot guarantee instant success as a big-time EDM producer for this course. But I will guarantee knowledge, support, and time.

In this course, I will go through 8 major sections that cover the main principles of how to make EDM music. Together, we will discuss the theories first, and apply it in real-time as we go through this course. By the end of this course, you will be able to apply the same concepts as you progress your knowledge and experience. You will be able to produce quality music suitable for venues, or simply sharing it with close friends in your circle.

But to really know if this course is suitable for you, first ask yourself: How valuable is two-years worth of experience to you? If you really value your time as much as I do, please read on.

How to EASILY Increase the Quality of Your EDM Music Without Having to Spend a Fortune Even if You Have Never Produced Before

There is nothing more inspiring than seeing thousands of people completely energized and dancing to your self-produced tracks on the main stage. If you are as inspired by electronic dance music as I am, you have probably asked yourself at some point how to become a music producer. I have been producing EDM music for years. But when I first started, I really didn’t know where to start. I had searched through several online electronic music tutorials and other electronic music production courses. However, many of the EDM courses assumed I had a $25,000 music studio to work with (Which I don’t). I had also searched through Youtube tutorials on how to make EDM music. But I would only get short little tutorials on a little part of the entire process of how to produce electronic music. But imagine if you had to learn a new language, and you had a new teacher every 5 minutes. You’ll likely be repeating the same thing over and over again.

So after years of accumulating experience and exploring the world of EDM music production, I have created my own course on how to make EDM music for beginners and intermediate producers. Through my course, I will teach you the theories of electronic music production, and put these theories into practice when we produce an electronic dance track together from beginning to end.

Becoming an EDM Producer Has Never Been More Accessible Than Now

Now is absolutely the best time to get started producing EDM music, and here are the reasons why I know for a fact that now is the best time to get started.

Fact: Apple has destroyed the recording studio industry. Thanks to Apple, you can now produce high quality music without the expensive recording studios. Just a few years ago, this was almost impossible with the very limited amount of Plug-ins and software instruments to choose from. But today, you can produce club quality tracks just from your laptop.

Fact: Youtube has destroyed the music publishing companies. Sharing has never been easier, and the music industry is all about sharing and creating your community of followers. It is easier than ever to produce your tracks and create a good following without a huge marketing budget.

Fact: DJing is getting completely saturated. For those of you who would love to transition from DJing to EDM music producing, this is the time to do it! As you know, DJing has become very easy now with all the new and improved beat-synchronization technology. I remember when I used to tell people that I was a DJ, but 90% of my friends would reply with – “Wow, me too!”. If you’re also a DJ, you know that feeling.

Fact: Music production is timeless! That’s because it is 25% technology, 25% practice, and 50% ingenuity. Which means unlike DJing, this is not a skill that can be copied or duplicated. Your music will reflect your creativity and personality which are only unique to you. My goal is to point you in the right direction with the correct techniques and concepts, so that you will have the confidence you need to explore your own style of music. And trust me, it is such an incredible feeling to know that their are people celebrating their evenings dancing to your music!

Why is My Course Different From all of the Others on the Market?

The most important part of learning how to make EDM music, is learning how to create great music with the tools we have. Too often, when producers are learning how to start producing electronic music, they make the mistake of assuming that the more expensive gear you have, the better your mix will sound. And it is the fast way to learn how to produce music. When I was first learning how to produce, I made the mistake of buying electronic music production courses with a lot of big celebrity names attached to it. The teachers would show me their collection of insanely expensive gear that they would use to produce the track. The microphone alone was $14,000! I was fascinated by all the equipment. But unfortunately, I didn’t really learn much through those online music courses, because I didn’t have those tools.

Even though expensive gear does help, it’s purpose is to make great mixes sound amazing! It won’t turn bad mixes into amazing mixes. Which means, we can make great mixes with the tools we have. And the concepts we will learn, will apply the same way no matter how cheap or expensive your equipment is. With my course, we will be using Logic pro 9 as our main music editing software, in which I will also include a basic logic pro 9 tutorial. I will show you how to use the included effects and plugins. We will be creating all of our instruments from scratch using native instruments’ massive plugin. And we will be using native instruments’ battery for all our drum patches. Both of these incredible plugins have free demo versions.

Furthermore, I have always believed that before we learn how to run, we need to first learn how to walk. The purpose of my course is to point you in the right direction of learning how to make EDM music. My course will not teach you how to produce electronic dance music in one hour, because if it really was that easy, everybody would be amazing electronic music producers.

My Goal For You After You Finish This Course (And The Real Reason I Created It For You In The First Place)

Why did I create this course, and why am I willing to share this information?

Unfortunately, a lot of producers are not willing to share their secrets. They believe competition is bad for their own careers. But this is simply not true. Producers are not selling cars, or brands that people are accustomed to purchasing. Music is all about exploring. People are always curious to hear the works of new producers. And most listeners have hundreds of producers they would listen to and follow. Venues are always looking for new talent.

In the words of the great Richard Branson (founder of the Virgin Group): A Little Healthy Competition is GOOD for the market! Producers are often afraid that a competitor might take their spot in the venue. But this is also simply not true. Even if a producer was named the best producer in the history of time, a venue will still not stick with the same producer every night. That’s because they understand that creativity comes in a variety of forms. And people need this variety to fully appreciate the music.

The more quality producers there are in the EDM genre, the more appreciation and recognition it draws.

Also…..I wanted to make it easier to aspiring producers to easily create high quality music. It took me years to learn all of this information that you will get in just 2 hours. Allowing you take your creativity and talent to a whole new level.

My goal is to show you the right direction on how to make EDM music. So that you can be playing your own music on the main in the future. After the course, you will be more confident in the time and effort that you will have to put in to really improve upon your skills as you become a music producer. I will show you how to train your ears over time so that you can tell how a professional track is mixed. And I can definitely provide the support in answering any questions you might have on how to start producing EDM music. And after you learn how to make EDM music, I hope to hear one of your tracks blasting at a big venue in the future!

What will be Covered Through this Course?

I have divided my course into 9 major sections. Each section will touch upon some theory and concepts, and together, we will apply these theories and concepts into real practice as we produce our dance song from start to finish.

Section 1 Welcome

This section is a general welcome message that will show you in detail how this course is structured. I will also get you familiarized with your new favorite music-editing software, and possibly the core of your future lifestyle as a music produce – Logic Pro. It will guide on you many of the most common commands and shortcuts we will be using through this course.

Section 2 Sound Design

The fun starts right away! In this section, we will be building our instruments from scratch using the powerful synthesize Massive and Battery. If you don’t own these synthesizers, no problem! The free demos are online. I have already checked with the creators of these demos, and they are fully function. You can even save these sounds. The only part that makes it a demo version is that they will shut down every 30 minutes (They will still give you the option to save first). So we can still produce the track from start to finish. The purpose of this section is also to get away from the presets that come with most synthesizers. I’m not exactly sure why, but many synthesizers come with an entire library of cheesy presets, in which you will only find 4 or 5 sounds you might use. So we will be building our very own unique sounds from scratch.

Section 3 Production Stage

Now that we have our instruments, it is time to put the piece together. In this section, we will be importing all the MIDI notes and putting them into place. The great thing about using MIDI files instead of audio files, is that you have so much more flexibility in the future. Many production courses will offer you audio files that you can work with. But the truth is, audio files are not good for creating future tracks. You can’t change the pitch, you can’t change the tempo. You are stuck with whatever that audio file offers you. But with the MIDI files, you can create completely new genres while still using the same instruments. It is a little more work in the beginning than using audio files, but you can create so many more songs after this course just be re-editing the MIDI files

Section 4 Mixing

This is the heart of being a producer. In this section, we will be balancing the volumes of the various instruments so that they all fit together properly. This may sound easy, but there’s a lot of aspects that go into mixing. To begin with, we will learn the theories of sound and how it works in the real world. It’s crucial that we understand the theories of mixing so we don’t end up with the “that doesn’t sound right” problem. We will also be exploring various effects and how to properly use them to help enhance our mix, rather than fighting it.

Section 5 Strong Transition

In every EDM song, there is a transition between the verse, and the all powerful chorus that is meant to get everybody jumping on their feet. But what really makes this powerful chorus, is the transition. It’s like watching a horror movie, the key is building the suspense. A strong transition in an EDM song will only make the chorus sound more powerful. In this section, I will show you various techniques of making your transitions stronger.

Section 6 Cool Techniques

In this section, I will share the techniques that I have come across over my years or producing music. It comes from my own experience of watching tutorials and testing different techniques to find what seems to work best in most of my tracks. I will share these techniques with you through a step-by-step process. I am confident that you will be using these techniques very often in your own mixes in the future.

Section 7 EQ for Strength

To tell you the truth, understanding EQ, or equalization, is an entire course to itself. In my course, I will teach you the theories of equalization and how it applies in the real world. I will show you various EQ techniques to help your instruments sit better in the whole song. I will also stay away from anything too advance. Again, this course was designed for beginners. I will show you the right direction to go when you’re familiarizing yourself with the world of equalization. This process also takes time, because as a beginner, our ears are not accustomed to listening for certain frequencies, and how to fix those frequencies. But in my course, I will show you different techniques of training your ears so that you can know what to listen for when you are balancing the frequencies your instruments.

Section 8 Finalizing

We will be wrapping up our song, finishing the final touches, and getting it ready for export. In the world of producing electronic music, this is an entire process to itself. Because what sounds good on your speakers, might sound too loud or too soft on someone else’s audio system. So in this section, I will be showing you how to properly export your track, so that it doesn’t break your friend’s earphones when you share it with them!

42 Sessions that include Video Lessons, PDF Guides, MIDI File Downloads, Sample Audio Files, and more. With this information you will save hundreds of dollars in private lessons, which can cost up to $100 an hour!

Awesome Bonus!

I’m also including a FREE Bonus section. The content of this bonus, which I have NOT seen anywhere else, is that I have 2 samples of the track we will create together. One sample will only use the effects and plug-ins that came with Logic Pro. The other version, will use the Waves effects bundle, which is valued at $9000. The reason I am doing this, is to show you the difference between using the tools you have, and using very expensive plug-ins on the same exact song! You will definitely notice a difference, but it is not as extreme as people may hope. This demonstration is to prove to you that you don’t need expensive equipment to make good music! You can make great mixes with the tools you have, and expensive equipment will make it sound amazing. But it won’t turn bad mixes into great mixes. At the end of the section, I will also include a PDF file of the exact Waves plug-ins I used on each instrument, if you should decide to take your mixes to the next level with Waves!

Are you ready to Live Your Dream?

I cannot guarantee tremendous success, or a revenue stream enough to quit school or your day job. Some producers do make millions a year, while others try to fit in time for music between two jobs. But in the end, it is a very fulfilling lifestyle. I am never bored. There are always more songs to write, and creativity can strike at any time of the day. Furthermore, a community always forms around music where I am free to share my thoughts with other producers and fans. Music is a very powerful thing that anybody can relate to. People will fly half way around the world just to see their favorite musicians. Can you think of any other profession that draws such a tremendous following?

Imagine yourself a year from now, watching thousands of people dancing to your beats at a large venue! Trust me, it’s worth it.

FAQs

How will the course be delivered?

After you have purchased the course, you will be given a link that will direct you to the course. This way, you can access the video tutorials and other documents anytime you want, as long as you have an internet connection.

I don’t use Logic Pro, can I use any other music editing softwares like Ableton or Garageband?

Yes you can, but it will be very difficult to follow along through my course, since many of the tutorials use the built-in effects and functions that came with Logic Pro. In addition, Garageband doesn’t have the flexibility you need to really create strong EDM music. In the near future, I will be creating this course for Ableton also, so please email me if you would like to get updates on the Ableton version of my course.

I have never made a song before, is this course right for me?

Definitely! I specifically designed this course for beginners. This way, you will understand the foundation of producing music, which makes it easier when it comes to understanding additional tips and techniques online.
