Abstract
Cross-border direct investment flows have been increasingly influenced by mergers and acquisitions, which continue to change the landscape of ownership and control of enterprises, as well as production and financing. This paper investigates the dynamics of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) for Canada in the context of Canadian Balance of Payments (BOP) framework. The transactions are captured in the Canadian BOP only if these result in actual direct investment inflows or outflows of funds and not otherwise. In order to identify the major drivers of foreign M&As, the paper develops an econometric model to test various hypotheses to identify major determinant factors of M&As. Prior to the hypothesis testing, we employ a number of diagnostic tests to test for the stationarity of the M&A historical time-series and also to see if any correlation exists between the historical M&A time-series data and events of major economic and political significance in Canada. The test results show that all time-series data on M&As whether they relate to total value and/or absolute numbers demonstrate stochastic nature. The findings also suggest that on the inward side variables like TSE dividend yield, TSE total values of transactions are statistically significant. For the outward transactions, the variables - NYSE total value or volume and Dow Jones Industrial Index, S&P dividend yield, regulatory regime play a significant role in driving M&As. Exchange rate turns out to be an important factor in driving M&As for the inward transactions. However, our results validate the earlier findings that exchange rates play an insignificant role in driving M&As for the outward transactions.

Abstract:
The paper documents findings of NASA and ISRO on depletion of groundwater resources in North Western part of India and rapid melting of glaciers in the Himalayas. The alarming depletion of groundwater resources in North Western part of India is a cause of great concern. Millions of people depend on groundwater reservoirs for daily use. “If measures are not soon taken to ensure sustainable groundwater usage, consequences for the 114 million residents of the region may include a collapse of agricultural output, severe shortages of potable water, conflict and suffering. Using satellite data, UC Irvine and NASA hydrologists have found that groundwater beneath northern India has been receding by as much as 1 foot per year over the past decade – and they believe human consumption is almost entirely to blame. The glaciers in the Himalayan mountain ranges are rapidly disappearing. Pollution caused by black carbon aerosols turns out to be the single most important factor in melting of glaciers. The scientific findings are corroborated by NASA’s GRACE Satellite and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and others.
If policy makers fail to initiate steps for recharging of groundwater and control of pollution caused primarily by human consumption, the situation could become uncontrollable and result in social, economic and political upheaval.
