High paying jobs without degree: I’m not here to deter you from college, but rather give you valuable information to empower you in walking down your life path. From my title you might think I am anti-college. Being a [college graduate, 18 year veteran in Silicon Valley, two-sport professional athlete and author], I will say that is far from the truth. I simply believe that while college can be a great experience, YOU are your greatest asset.

Going College has many benefits:
On average, a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree earned $30,000 more per year than a high school graduate, or about $500,000 more over a lifetime, as of Apr. 2013. 70% of college graduates had access to employer-provided health insurance compared to 50% of high school graduates in 2008. Healthier Lifestyle – 83% of college graduates reported being in excellent health, while 73% of high school graduates reported the same. A 2009 study found 16 to 24 year old high school drop-outs were 63% more likely to be incarcerated than those with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Outside of the cost, learning is always worthwhile. If you’ve spent four years in a place where you were forced to consider new ideas, meet new people, ask new questions, and learn to think, socialize, imagine, that is always beneficial to one’s growth. Harvard Business School estimates that 65 to 85% of jobs are acquired through networking. College students can join fraternities and sororities, clubs, and teams as well as participate in a variety of social functions to meet new people and network with possible business connections. College graduation can represent an attainment of the American Dream, the culmination of years of hard work for the student, and the payoff for sacrifices made by supporting parents and friends

In 2008, there were 17 million “underemployed” college graduates in the United States In the United States today, over 18,000 parking lot attendants have college degrees In a recent article in the December 2014 New York Times reported that unemployment rate in 2013 was lower among whites who never finished high school (9.7 percent) than it was for blacks with some college education (10.5 percent).
COLLEGE MAY WORK BUT HERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT IT
Many people succeed without college degrees. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 30 projected fastest growing jobs between 2010 and 2020, five do not require a high school diploma, nine require a high school diploma, four require an associate’s degree, six require a bachelor’s degree, and six require graduate degrees.
Learning a trade profession is a better option than college for many young adults. Middle-skill jobs represent half of all jobs in the US that pay middle-class wages. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “middle-skill” jobs will make up 45% of projected job openings through 2014, but as of 2012 only 25% of the workforce had the skills to fill those jobs.
College degrees do not guarantee learning or job preparation. Many students graduate from college with little understanding of math, reading, civics, or economics. In 2011 36% of students demonstrated no significant improvement on Collegiate Learning Assessments after 4 years of college.
College political agenda: David Horowitz, MA, conservative activist and author, asserts that university “curriculum has been expanded to include agendas about ‘social change’ that are overtly political.” Some may not think this is a bad thing but college should be about learning and gathering information rather than indoctrination.
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg didn’t finish college. Too much emphasis is placed on formal education – I told my children not to worry about their grades but to enjoy learning.
