Welcome To Car Myths

Car Myths is devoted to helping the average person understand the basics when it comes to owning, driving, and maintaining a vehicle.

Popular Myth

A New Air Filter Will Increase Fuel Economy

Modern day cars use Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) as opposed to a Carburetor. These EFI equipped engines are controlled by a computer which measures the amount of air entering your engine and matches it with the proper amount of fuel. A carburetor will always provide a pre-set amount of fuel, even with less air due to a dirty air filter. In short, newer EFI cars will gain performance, but not fuel mileage from a new air filter.

Popular Myth

Wheel Alignments Will Fix A Vibration Or Wobble In The Steering Wheel

Wheel alignments are necessary when your vehicle is pulling left or right while driving down the road. Wobbles and vibrations are usually the result of incorrectly balanced tires. Tire balancing is necessary as your tires develop wear patterns. The wear is the deterioration of rubber at a slow rate which means weight is lost from the tire causing the tire to be "out of balance". This imbalance of tires can create a wobble sent up the steering components to the steering wheel.
