My Long, Frustrating Battle With Psoriasis

It may be one of the most painful afflictions of all time. Yes, psoriasis pustules burn, itch and hurt, but it is not just the physical pain that causes its victims so much distress; it is also the emotional pain. I know because I too suffered from this dreaded disease most of my life.

According to my mother, my skin was always “sensitive.” Even as a small child, it would erupt in a rash or itchy breakouts when irritated. She recalls washing my tiny infant clothing in special detergents and then rinsing them several times in clear water just to prevent another outbreak of redness, rash and of course incessant crying from the discomfort it caused. My doctor didn’t know what to do and neither did my parents.

As I grew, so did my symptoms. I remember in elementary school having such a harsh outbreak from sweating after a hard game of kick ball that the school nurse had to call my mom to come and get me and take me straight to the doctor. Even she had never seen anything like my red, scaly and pustule filled skin. This certainly did not help me grow into a confident child. Not just a disease of the skin, psoriasis eventually begins to erode the quality of life amongst its victims.
