Having been married for 30 yrs, I have never been a great cook but by following Caroline Andrew’s very simple, easy to follow, very flavoursome recipes I have become one.  Whenever I cook her meals – I receive great compliments from my family, friends and others. Hi, my name is Caroline, and maybe you can relate to my story?

I barely missed (by one year) of being a Baby Boomer, so I grew up in a society that was starting to rely more & more on fast food and/or convenience foods. I’m old enough to have experienced the “meat & three veg” evening meal as a child. This was normal food for multiplied millions around the world.

But along with that diet came the inevitable consequences in our health. I personally experienced a number of different & persistent health problems as I grew up.  Every winter struggling with respiratory infections, and there were skin problems, constipation so bad that my mum would occasionally need to take me to the doctor (sorry about being that honest!) and as I got older over-weight problems.

And I never seemed to have much energy, even as a kid!

Nobody joined the dots between diet and disease back then. Of course, as an early teenager all I cared about was my looks so I would read through magazines and try different diet plans (some things never change, eh?)

By my mid-teens I was starting to understand some basic nutrition, but I had this other problem – I liked cooking nice food, and especially desserts! (And I was pretty good at it too.)

Then came the real kicker – my first job after leaving school was in a bakehouse! I gained around 10kg in the 10 weeks that I worked there

My worst nightmare was coming true…and nothing I did seemed to change things!

Fortunately I had to leave that job as my family moved, but I ended up getting work in hospitality and of course, that again involved food!

Do you ever feel like your best efforts are continually getting sabotaged?

Well…long story cut short:

A few years later I was fortunate enough to meet a group of people who were further along in the health-seeking journey than I was, and after learning what I could from them (and putting it in to practice, of course)…

I dropped 3 dress sizes in 10 weeks and started experiencing better health than I’d ever had before…

Well, that was over 25 years ago…

…and I guess, to be honest, I have to mention that I’ve been deprived of a number of things in that time:
Obesity, diabetes, infertility, wrinkles, eczema, insomnia, hives, back problems, arthritis, …and probably other things that I’m not aware of.

Meh…you can have ‘em!

“But wait,” you might be thinking, “I don’t want those things either!”

Nobody does, really, do they? But what we put in our mouths does impact whether our bodies function at their peak or start to mal-function.  One thing is for sure – if we’ve had a diet and lifestyle that created disease, drugs and surgery might mask some of the problem, but cannot make you feel energetic, and look amazing.

That’s just one of the truths that I’ve discovered in my journey.

Anyway, back to the story:

Once I’d started to reap the rewards of a plant-based, vegan diet, I started creating a collection of the best recipes I could find…because, that’s what you do…right?

Not too long after that I met my husband who’d been raised Vegan, (so, that worked out well for both of us!) and not long after that, we married (Vegan Wedding Reception, of course) and soon after we started a family.

Now, when you’re on a good wicket you can take that for granted I guess. However, as the years rolled by, I learnt that there were many people out there who were feeling frustrated with themselves and their health problems just like I once had.  (You wouldn’t happen to know anyone like that, would you??)

All they needed was some help and guidance to learn the simple, yet life-changing health principles that were, by now, second nature to me.

Of course, back in the day when this was happening to me, being Vegan wasn’t really trendy. You were more likely to be labelled as weird than wise! I discovered that those close to you can often present the strongest opposition.

To help people in that situation I started running cooking demonstration courses, and even started studying Nutritional Therapy. That proved to be a great testing ground for my recipe collection, I can assure you!! It was also the birth of my cookbook.

It was then that I also got to appreciate the questions and struggles that newbies often face

What to expect your body to do when you cut out wrong foods How it may affect medications you are currently using What options do you have when eating out? Are there ways to convert your favourite foods into a vegan version? Is a vegan diet safe for children, pregnant women and the elderly?


It was such a privilege to be able to share from (what I thought was) my humble experiences!

My reputation started to precede me and I was eventually asked to cater for groups with quite varying backgrounds – from youth camps to Conferences. And I discovered that there was a multi-cultural appeal, having had rave reviews from big Samoan guys, Chinese, European, South Africans… to name a few.

I still get blown away that people rave so much about my recipes!

Well, the point of all this is that I understand how confusing and daunting it can seem when you’re sitting there at your computer with a burning desire to start making positive change, but not knowing which way to turn!
