Dear World-Wide Aquarium Enthusiast...

Many of my friend from outside Japan, had visited my house and let out a surprised sound.

“what’s this ECOLOGICAL fish ??”

It’s not like a “KOI” fish, not needed a big pond and bunch of foods and cost...
And also they are yet more beautiful than “Goldfish”....

"Please let me know more this killifish"

My many friends from western countries are to continue asking.

YES, that is “Japanese Killifish”, they are called “Medaka” in Japanese and have always been extremely familiar fish to Japanese people for many many years.

Meaning of “Medaka” in Japanese language.

Japanese Killifish (Medaka) is written as ""in Japanese Kanji character.
The common features of Japanese Killifish are their big "Googly Eyes".

Their eyes are positioned slightly higher above on their faces in comparison to other fish, and easy watching out for something falling into water surface.

They are often mistaken as a “Western Mosquito Fish”, but they are completely different kind.
Japanese Killifish are not so much carnivorous than Mosquitofish and specifically can endure lower temperature.

Amazing revolution in these days...

Originally they are living in east asia including Japan region, but now they are amazingly under a wonderful evolution. Their body colors and shapes are increased the number and the combination would seems to be over 300 types.

Especially a fish with precious color are oftenly traded at 200 or 300 dollars in the auction.

Some Japanese fish hobbyist says that the boom of KOI or Goldfish were ended.
Now is the time of “Medaka Fish” !!

To that extent, the popularity of Japanese killifish now raising up.

Alright then, here is an introducing new age of Japanese killifish !

and more and more....
How is it? Do you have an interest ?

Please give me 3 minites more... Here's a quick look at just a few of the Japanese killifish character and the secret I share with you;

Let me introduce myself?

Hi, My name is Masa Itoh. I am a Japanese killifish enthusiast for more than 10 years.

My first a wonderful encounter with Japanese killifish were in summer of 2004.
When My elder daughter saw a small orange colored “Himedaka” selling with a sad air in a pet store, she start begging.

“Dad, I wanna buy this and saving his life.”
“ I will take care of him during this summer holiday “

So we decided to buy that small fish. To save his life from this inferior pet store’s water tank and give him happiness, that was our wishes.
But ....

Only a few weeks after taking him home, our fish died.

With sawing sadly crying my daughter, I decided to learn more deeply about
Best rearing a Japanese killifish.

From that time, I am becoming a crazy for this rather than my daughter, and now
am living with many kind of Japanese killifish and enjoying all types of rearing, from biotope at outside verandah to indoor aquarium put in some aquatic plants and decorative stones etc.

Features of Japanese killifish

1) Tiny and cute
The biggest charming point of Japanese Killifish is purely their looks. They are the smallest freshwater fish in Japan. their bodies grow to just over 3 cm in full length. As their name in Chinese characters "" (high eyes) implies, their large eyes sit just above their faces. They also have little puckered-up mouths, and the way they swim smoothly in water in schools is simply adorable to look at.

2) Adept at swimming
Japanese Killifish are very skilled swimmers. You see them swimming gracefully one minute, then they make a full stop the next minute, and then they turn around quickly.
The agile movements seem to have a correlation with the brilliant fins of these Japanese Killifish. They have a total of seven fins: tailfins that help them to swim forward, back fins and bottom fins that support them to stay straight, and two of each fin that are on their stomachs and their chest.

3) Resilient against the change in water temperature
Japanese Killifish are fish that have survived through the grand nature of Japan. Remarkably, they can endure through the four different seasons, one example of this is their ability to hibernate at the bottom of waterways and wait until spring in extremely cold winters where they can’t even swim.

4) They live just under the surface
The common features of Japanese Killifish are their big googly eyes. Because their eyes are positioned slightly higher above on their faces in comparison to other fish, they are named ‘Medaka’ which means ‘high eyes’ in Japanese.
These Japanese Killifish have very good eyesight and have wide-angle vision, so they see everything that reflects on the surface of the water.
Their mouths are also positioned upward like their eyes. This is so that they can find and catch their food easily. Therefore, food in small pieces that float on water would be appropriate as their food.

5) They swim against the current
Japanese Killifish swim with their heads tilted upwards as if they are swimming against the current. This is one of their traits from swimming in rivers which have strong currents that extend to the ocean.
Because of their small body size, they don’t have much stamina so they can easily lose their strength in places with very strong currents. They certainly don’t like to lay eggs in places with strong currents either.

About rearing

There are actually many ways to raise them

There are many ways to raise Japanese Killifish apart from raising them in water tanks. Evidently, the most popular way is to raise them in a water tank, but there are many other ways to raise them as Japanese Killifish have quite strong vitality; you can for example raise them in an empty bottle, or in a water lily bowl or a plastic bowl in your garden or on your verandah.
Try to find and enjoy your own way of raising Japanese Killifish depending on the space you have at home and your living style and think about how you would want to enjoy observing them.

Indoor Rearing
Ideally, you want to keep them in a water tank which makes it easy for you to observe them. This is one way to enjoy watching them swim everyday from the sides as you would with tropical fish. There will be less instability in water temperatures indoors compared to rearing them outside, and additionally, cleaning and maintaining the water quality is fairly easy if you put in a filter; this is a great way of rearing for beginners to try.
You can also enjoy it as an indoor aquarium if you put in some aquatic plants and decorative stones. The only bad point may be that you can’t completely leave them on their own like you would if you had them in a biotope aquarium outside.

Outdoor Rearing
This is a way to rear them in water lily bowls or plastic cases in your own garden or on your verandah. Because Japanese Killifish primarily live in a natural environment, this is probably the closest way to match their natural environment by having them outside under natural sunlight.
Outdoor rearing will then result in enjoying observing Japanese Killifish from above, there are many fans of outdoor rearing that say you should enjoy observing Japanese Killifish looking down from above.
Compared to raising them in a water tank indoors, the Japanese Killifish will become very healthy under the natural sunlight, another advantage is not having to spend too much time and money on maintenance.
