So before I even knew it, my absorption with this energy expressed itself in studies as I relentlessly researched to find out more about this power.
And this is what I found…
There is a constant yet ever-changing, dynamic force that rules your life as an undercurrent.
It is the force that lies behind all growth and decay, and in fact, all transformation, flowing through all levels of social, cosmic and corporeal existence.
This divine power, resides, not only in all gods, but within all human beings as well.
It is the potent energy inside the human body, it is the divine energy of the goddess, the power of both life and death, creation and destruction.
This feminine force, this energy, attributes power over creation, all speech, nature, mind, and liberation, the universe itself, to Devi, the Goddess.
This force is Shakti or ‘Power’ itself!
Coming from the Sanskrit word ‘Shakta’ with the root ‘shak’ meaning ‘to be able’ or ‘to do’, Shakti refers to ‘power’, ‘energy’ or ‘strength’ at all levels in the universe. In the form of the Goddess, she is known as ‘Parashakti’ that is Primordial Power.
But why a Goddess and not a God?
Growing up in a family of a lot of women gave me the chance to be acutely aware of the dynamics of gender…
Clearly there was the classification of the ‘feminine’ and the ‘masculine’ but I wanted to go deeper and find out why, how and where it all arose from.
As I continued to delve deeper into ancient texts and simultaneously continued to observe people around me, I found the answer to my questions through one of the beliefs of The Sankhya School of Philosophy.
It is stated:
The two entities from the conjunction of which the universe and its beings came into existence are called Prakriti and Purusha.
The term Prakriti is the feminine principle, which is the material cause behind creation, which is the principle of primordial matter, the ground of all things, the procreation of nature.
The second principle is Purusha- the principle of consciousness, that is chaitanya. Sankhya philosophy explains the creation of the universe in terms of the interplay between the two.
Prakriti is an expression of Purush, if there is no Purush there can be no Prakriti, and if there is no Prakriti, Purush cannot be experienced.They are, just like the overt masculine forces and the underlying feminine forces of our own personal lives, they are inseparable, incomplete without each other.
One Cannot exist without the other

My first real exposure to the Indian tradition of goddesses happened in 2004, while pursuing a doctoral degree in theology at the University of Oxford.
