Let’s stick to the basics of the language.

Warning: only 5% of Brazilians SPEAK ENGLISH.

Brazilian Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.

Although English has become a Global Language, very few people (in fact, only 5%) of Brazilians speak good English, according to research by the British Council in Brazil and EF English Proficiency Index.

When you arrive in Brazil and start doing things on your own outside the hotel, you will see for yourself how hard it is to find people who speak English in the street, in bars, restaurants, supermarkets, drugstores, on the bus stop, in a taxi, and so on.

Therefore, if you don’t know the essentials of Portuguese, you´ll probably have difficulties to make yourself understood.

How can I help you speak Brazilian Portuguese?

My course is made up of 7 easy and simple lessons.

It’s focused on content words, that is, words which carry lexical and relevant meaning in a conversation.

Learning how to use content words is just like writing a telegram, I mean, speaking a telegram. You omit words which don’t interfere in the intelligibility of the message.

Every lesson begins with a situational dialogue which shows you how these common and everyday words are used in a very objective way. For example, in a sentence such as “I would like to drink some beer, please.”, we just say “Cerveja, por favor”, that is “Beer, please.”

In the rest of the lessons, you have lots of practice.

And who am I to help you?

My name´s Hegrisson Alves

I´m a 56-year-old Brazilian native speaker, born in Rio de Janeiro, with a Degree and a Master’s in Modern Languages and a Diploma (Delta) from the University of Cambridge. I have been teaching English and Portuguese for more than 30 years now. Language teaching and learning have always been my passion.

Why have I designed this course?

As I said in the previous paragraph, language teaching and learning have always been my passion. Over these 30 years, I have never stopped thinking and doing research on how people really learn and what methods should be used to motivate and maximize students’ learning.

It gives me great pleasure to know I have taught thousands of people to communicate in other languages. And that’s the main aim of my life: to help people from different countries to bridge the gap in communication.

Sharing with you an embarrassing situation I had in China with my wife

In 2007, some friends, my wife and I went to a Symposium on Sinology in China. During 15 days, we attended lectures and visited unforgettable places in China.

Being a fluent speaker of English, I thought I didn’t have to learn any Chinese. I just memorized some greetings like ‘ni hao’ (Hi), ‘ni hao ma?’ (How are you?), ‘shang wu hao’(Good morning) and ‘xie xie’ (Thank you).

Honestly, I didn’t think learning the essentials of Chinese would help me at all. First, because I expected to find lots of people speaking English in China. Second, we were travelling in a group with a local translator who was fluent in Portuguese, English and Chinese. And I was not planning to get away from the group.

One day my wife and I decided to take a taxi to visit a shopping mall we had passed by when arriving in a city. The hotel receptionist kindly gave us the hotel card (written in Chinese script), put us on a taxi and told the driver where we wanted to go.

On arriving in the mall, we noticed that hardly anyone spoke English in the shops we went to. And when they did, it was really difficult to understand what they were saying.

The worst was about to come. When we took a taxi to go back to the hotel, we showed the taxi driver the hotel card. He didn’t speak a single word in English – let alone Portuguese. He kept signaling a type of ‘OK’ gesture and smiling while pointing at the card. At that moment, we were happy to see he knew where we were going to …. But it turned out to be just the opposite. He took us to a different hotel.

He seemed to be an honest taxi driver, but was not helping much. He continued gesturing and saying something completely unintelligible to us.

I then got out of the taxi and walked into the hotel he had taken us trying to find a Chinese who spoke English to help us out. Fortunately, one of the receptionists spoke a bit of English. I showed her the hotel card of our hotel. She said she knew where it was. She kindly went out with me and spoke in Chinese with the driver apparently explaining the way to the hotel where we were staying. One hour later, we finally arrived at our hotel.

If I knew how to say a couple of phrases in Chinese such as “Please, take us to ….?” or just “Take us to ….” or “Ring the hotel, please”, it could have saved us time and worries.

Knowing some basic phrases would have certainly helped us to interact with Chinese in places like restaurants, markets, shops, etc.

What have I learnt as a foreigner in this trip to China?

This experience has taught me two important lessons:

1st - learn the essentials of the country’s language so that you can get by anywhere you go.

2nd - once in the country, the more you interact, the more you learn about the language and culture, the more confident you become.

How you can benefit from it!

This episode in China has shown me how important it is to know the essentials of the country’s language you are visiting in order to avoid embarrassing or delicate situations.

By doing this in advance, you can dedicate yourself to really take advantage of trip without having to worry about the language.

To help YOU learn the essentials of Brazilian Portuguese for the World Cup in June and July, I have designed a special course FOR YOU focusing on language you undoubtedly need to communicate your needs and interests.

What our students have to say...

Professor Hegrisson is an excellent professional. During the time I attended his classes, I could see that he loves what he does, which is a very inspiring factor. Apart from that, in his classes I learnt more than I thought I was capable of, for he had all the answers and always found the best way to show me that nothing is so difficult as it seems. I am an English freelance translator who is constantly learning English, but I am sure that most of what I know, I learnt from him.

I owe a debt of gratitude to professor Hegrisson Alves. His concern in updating himself on modern methodology is admirable. He invests heavily in the purchase of domestic and imported technical and educational books. He doesn't neglect a moment to give and maintain student motivation, avoiding routine. He documents the contents in various forms. He uses his own mistakes to illustrate the learning process. I highly recommend him. If you want to produce the maximum in learning English or Portuguese language in a short time, this is the right professional.
