 the importance of provenance




Provenance: An items earliest known history. Provenance can make you a lot of money. Whenever accepting consignments, always, always, always get as much history as you can from consignors. An avid collector and repeat consignor of antiques told me a story that will remain etched in my mind forever. The story began with this gentleman buying a Native American Indian shirt from an antique dealer. This shirt was unique and very beautiful with beaded, painted and fringe decoration. The attention to detail and its sheer quality caught the buyers eye. He knew it belonged to someone important. Without any history to its owner, cash exchanged hands in the sum of $20,000. Some time later, the buyers research paid off. The gentleman found an old photograph of Chief Blackbird of the Oglala Sioux tribe wearing the shirt. He struck gold. Shortly after, with photo in hand, he put the shirt up for auction at Sotheby's. The shirt went up for auction and broke a record, selling for $2,658,500. If you can connect an item to an important person, it can literally multiply its value. ​

I began selling my old video games and other items of value. I instantly fell in love. With a desire to earn and learn, I took what little savings I had and bought products from China, then sold them for 4 to 5 times the cost. I dedicated every spare minute to buying low and selling high.
