Mike Singer began playing guitar at the age of 10. But he learned bits and pieces of chords, scales, songs, rhythms, progressions, and riffs over many years as various musicians and school music classes shared fragmented information with him. After serving in the United States Navy he went back to college to study jazz guitar and music education where he gained a much more comprehensive understanding of music. A few years later he became an Ocean Lifeguard, Emergency Medical Technician, and Tri-athlete - playing and singing on the side as a hobby. He has taken on many private students over the years. And he was the guitar teacher for group classes at a private school in Coconut Grove, Florida. Finally, he entered midlife crisis and decided to become the world's next great blues guitar player/singer. He spends much of his time developing and fine tuning his own guitar playing and singing skills learning songs in the genres of: Blues, Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Country, and Cajun. He continues to work with private students and has posted numerous video tutorials on YouTube. When I first saw a guitar as a child, at around 9 years-of-age, it only had two strings on it. I started trying to make sounds with them. And I did not have a clue. I begged my mom and dad for a new guitar, and some guitar lessons. Several months later, for Christmas, they bought me a cheap red sunburst steal string acoustic guitar and signed me up for group guitar lessons at a local high school in the evenings. Surrounded by about 6 - 8 people ranging from 12 - 65 years-of-age I watched the young lady guitar teacher diagramming chords on the chalk board for the song: Puff The Magic Dragon. I never quite grasped it. Then she gave us the chords for Proud Mary from CCR. Being a young 70s wannabe Rock Star I took much more interest in that song. However, I remember struggling to learn that song. The D chord was impossible. And the steal strings were killing my fingers. I also frequently went next door to my neighbor's house. An older man, Jim, in his 60s along with his younger son, Lynn, in his early 20s both taught me a thing or two. What I remember most is Jim teaching me a one-string song he wrote called: 'Jim's Ditty,' and Lynn teaching me how to play E position Bar Chords with 'Smoke On The Water' by Deep Purple. I also remember watching Lynn playing 12 Bar Blues in the Key of E. When I asked him to teach me that he said: "That is too difficult. It will be a couple of years before I can teach you how to play that!" With all due respect and love to Lynn, I know he was not a professional guitar instructor, I now teach my six-year-old students how to play 12 Bar Blues in the Key of E within 1 hour!
