Continue reading and you will find out all you need to know on how you and your child can learn how to take care of your aquatic frogs and toads. After you get your first tank of full of frogs or toads you will find it is much easier to keep them than fish and a lot more fun too!

Owning and raising aquatic frogs and toads is inexpensive and lots of fun!

If you lived in or near a pond or swampy area as a child, you may remember fun times trying to catch swamp frogs. If you remember keeping frogs or toads in a jar as a child you already know what fun they are to have and watch. Small aquatic frogs and toads make an excellent and inexpensive pet which can help your child learn the responsibility of caring for a pet with a minimum of fuss.

Where do African Clawed Frogs live in the wild?

The African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis) is also known as the African Clawed Toad, and the African Claw-Toed Frog. It is an aquatic species from Africa, ranging from Nigeria and the Sudan to South Africa.

African Clawed Frogs live in murky, stagnant water, hunting with ruthless efficiency drawing on finely honed survival instincts. Although they spend almost all their time underwater, when the need arises, they’ll pick up and move to another pond.

If a drought occurs they burrow into the ground and can live in a state of suspended animation for as long as 10 months. Although these frogs can handle wide fluctuations in pH levels, they will sicken and die in the presence of metal ions; and on this page you will find out more information on why this is true.

How large do African Clawed Frogs get?

Male African Clawed Frogs reach an average length of 2-4 inches (5.1-10.2 cm) and weigh 2 ounces (60 grams). The larger females are 2.5-5 inches (6.4-13 cm) and weigh 7 ounces (220 grams.)

The head and body of the African Clawed Frog is somewhat depressed and flattened, with small, round eyes sitting on top. African Clawed Frogs have webbing on their hind feet ONLY, and there are three short claws on each back foot.

What colors are common to African Clawed Frogs?

Typically, the body color is dark gray shifting to a greenish brown dorsally, with a pale underside. There are 4 different varieties, albinos, pigmented, piebald and leusitic which are covered in detail in the book.

How do African Clawed Frogs eat their food?

These frogs have no teeth or tongue, so they use their front feet to shove food into their mouths since their snouts are curved and rather flat. The African Clawed Frog’s hind legs are long and robust. Each of the three inner toes of the webbed back feet has a tiny, black claw.

African clawed frogs will interact with the people who care for them.

African Clawed Frogs are certainly capable of recognizing their keeper and other family members, and will often come to the top of the water for a few moments of “conversation.”

Since they will eat anything that moves, there’s no trick to teaching a Clawed Frog to eat out of your hand. Just wiggle something in front of his nose and they will come to you and eat it right out of your hand.

Raising African Clawed Frogs can be a simple choice for a good first pet because they work well to show your child how to be responsible for a pet and taking care of one.

You may know from past experience the joy of caring for a pet and the love that having a pet of your own means to you. Let you child feel the pride of caring for, feeding, and cleaning the aquarium while benefiting from watching their own frog's antics. All these can be very rewarding tasks!

Your child will love having a pet of their own to care for and will always remember the good times they had with their small aquatic pets!

So how you get started with a new aquatic frog or toad?
