Syrian Hamsters are sometimes called 'teddy bear hamsters" or 'golden hamsters'. Owning and raising a hamster is easy to do, all you need is a small corner of a room and a cage to raise them. If you have seen the cute, cuddly hamsters in pet stores you may have been intrigued with the tiny and lovable creatures and want one for your own!

They really are cute loveable creatures with their little noses always twitching and fun to watch as they scurry around. Hamsters are a very cheerful pet, are pleasant to have as a pet, and can be a joy to take everywhere with you.

Being a hamster owner is a unique experience and while hamsters are often seen as pets in a cage, they are very adaptable.

Hamsters can be housetrained.

Many hamster pet owners simply enjoy playing and cuddling with them and can adapt to travelling so you can take them with you.

If you are thinking of buying a hamster as a pet...

You need to know all about hamsters in regards to care, feeding, diet, cages, behaviors, breeding, pregnancy and life span. When you have a hamster as a pet you will find they bond very well with their owners and having your own hamster is a joy!

You can find Syrian hamsters called names such as black bear, teddy bear, or panda bear. It’s important to remember that these are just names given to Syrian hamsters based on their looks, and they are not a different species.

So what exactly is a hamster?

Syrian hamsters belong to the Mesocricetus auratus species. Syrian hamster was classified and named in 1839 by a young British zoologist named George Robert Waterhouse. Waterhouse classified and named the hamster, as well as showed its skull and skin to the Zoological Society of London.

So how did the little creature become so popular and widespread?

In 1930, Israel Aharoni, a Hebrew zoologist, went on an expedition to the Aleppo region. At the request of Saul Alder, a colleague and parasitologist who used hamsters for research, he looked for and found, with the help of others, a nest with a female and eleven pups. Then he breed together two of these hamsters and within a year, there were over 150 hamsters!

in 1931, the Syrian hamster made it to England. The story is that Alder sneaked the hamsters into England in his coat pockets! In time the furry little hamsters made their way into the hearts and homes of the people, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Hamsters can make very friendly small animal companions.

Hamsters enjoy human company, and they will interact with the people who care for them.

Raising and caring for hamsters can be a fun and rewarding experience, simply because these tiny pets are a truly warm and friendly companion. The benefits of owning and raising hamsters are a pleasure for young and old alike!

The key to a perfect hamster pet is to find one that suits your personality so you are sure to have a good match between you and your new pet.

How many types of hamsters are there?

This book focuses on the care for the Syrian and Golden Hamster, it is important to look at the different types of hamsters that you can purchase. Remember that when you are buying a hamster that you make sure it is the species of hamster that you desire.

When given proper care and attention, hamsters are odor-free and clean; thus wonderful little pets for children to hold and cuddle. Children usually make good hamster owners because they enjoy spending time with their hamster. With their silly antics and shenanigans, hamsters can entertain children and adults.

The most common type of hamster found in pet stores is the Syrian and Golden Hamster.

In general, Syrian hamsters have cylindrical bodies and are about six to eight inches long, and they weigh in at about three to five ounces. Of course, their weight and size can vary. Dwarf hamsters are smaller hamsters than the Syrian golden hamster.

The hamster’s teeth, one pair of upper incisors and a pair of lower incisors continue to grow as the hamster ages. If their teeth are not aligned properly and kept whittled down by their gnawing on wood, they can literally starve to death, so chew sticks are high on the hamster’s shopping list!

A hamster’s most active times are dawn and dusk. It makes sense that hamsters would forage about during the early morning hours, having the advantage of daylight to scout for food, but not having the disadvantage of
nocturnal predators.

For better understanding, let’s sort out some of the many coats, colors, and patterns of the Syrian hamster.

Hamsters coats, colors and patterns include:

Longhaired

Shorthaired

Satin Coat

Rex Coat

Syrian Coat Pattern

Branded

Dominant Spotted

Roan

Tortoise Shell

Other Coat Colors (Ranging from Golden to Black and even Albino!)

In the book, I cover the wide assortment of colours and while they may seem similar, there are colour differences between the colour variations.

This is great information for someone that is interested in owning a particular color of hamster and for hamster breeders when mating different color combinations.

Here's a sneak peak at what is inside the book!
