Towards the end of the 1970′s the aerobics craze swept across the nation, and forward thinking doctors began thinking “Hey… if aerobics and physical activity in general is helping healthy people get stronger and fitter, surely it can also help older men and women with poor balance get stronger too.”
 




What Happened When These People Rested Until They Were Sufficiently Healed And Then Got Back To Physical Activity ?



 
They started getting results
 
But there was a problem: These aerobics based programs also often resulted in falls, serious injuries, and even trips to the emergency room.
 
Whilst these programs worked quite well, they simply weren’t safe… They were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole (aerobics for older men and women with poor balance), instead of just simply going with a round peg for a round hole (safe and specific exercises targeted at improving balance and strength for people with balance problems).

They started using different types of specific balance exercises that utilized a bunch of fancy equipment like wobble boards, balance pads, “force” platforms and even skateboards!

The results from it were negligible… The studies conducted on these “high-tech” pieces of
equipment found that the actual real-world improvements in the clinical indicators of balance, and the likelihood of falls were mediocre at best.
