After 25 years of training, I found myself approaching 40, trapped in an exercise rut.
I was lifting weights six days per week, and squeezing in a little cardio here and there as time permitted (hating every minute of it). My body fat hovered around 15 percent, and my strength had plateaued years before. I was in decent shape for my age, but I wasnât in GREAT shape. In fact I had never been in GREAT shape. I began training with former Navy SEALs, Russian Spetsnaz, college coaches and elite fitness professionals. I exchanged ideas and worked with respected coaches in combat sports. I researched the training habits of the old vaudevillian strongmen â pound for pound, some of the strongest humans to ever walk the planet. From these things, I took what I liked best, distilled it all, and began creating my own workout routines.
The results were phenomenal. Through trial and error, I discovered the secrets of obtaining extraordinary fitness. As of this writing, Iâm 44 years old and far fitter than Iâve EVER been in my life. Iâm not just in great shape for my age, Iâm in great shape for ANY age. In fact, now in my 40s:
My aches and pains have disappeared. My blood pressure is perfect. Not only am I stronger than Iâve ever been in my life, I am also pound for pound one of the strongest people I have ever known. I can run faster, run further, and jump higher than when I was 18. At 42, I participated in the extreme 11.5 mile Tough Mudder endurance event and finished in the top 5 percent of all ages. Most people train months specifically for this event. I simply followed my usual, brief lunchtime workouts. The same ones I will teach to you. I walk around at less than 8 percent bodyfat without even trying. If I try just a little bit (like no ice cream before bed), I get below 6 percent. And no, Iâve never been a naturally lean person at all. I feel younger now than I did ten years ago. Few 25 year olds can keep up with me physically and that is a fact. My workouts are designed to naturally boost production of growth hormone (HGH). This leads to more muscle, less fat, and slows down the aging process.
