Essentially, overreaching is a fancy term used to describe purposely overworking a muscle for a short period of time, just before it turns into overtraining. Now the odd thing about overtraining is that it is very misconceived by the public.

To actually overtrain a muscle is significantly harder than you imagine. In fact, most people wouldn’t even be able to overtrain because their daily routine consists of inactivity for a good portion of the day at their job. As long as you adequately recover and your nutrition is on-track most of the time, overtraining is essentially voided when you overreach for only a short amount of time.

In the case with our Anabolic Protocols you are actually only overreaching for a short period of time. During this timeframe you end up training specific muscle groups outlined in our protocols, such as biceps and triceps, more frequently.


Overreaching is just one element that makes our Anabolic Protocols so special. We have combined many other proven methods for gaining the most amount of muscle mass possible such as anabolic training techniques like drop sets, rest pause sets and forced reps. There have been a lot of studies that have shown these techniques boost the release of Human Growth Hormone and Testosterone by up to 2x its original level[3] than if you just stuck with regular sets.



Research behind overreaching and certain techniques like drop-sets weren’t the only reasons we constructed our training program as we did. It was also to take advantage of what James Stoppani calls in his Encyclopedia of Muscle and Strength “the staircase effect."


The staircase effect is simply building upon the effects of a previous workout. You see, when you work out, you activate genes in the muscle fibers responsible for many things such as muscle growth and strength increases.

Once these genes are activated, they remain in a heightened state for several days after. This means repeated workouts, if timed properly, can actually put these genes in an even higher state, leading to the muscle’s ability to grow even bigger and stronger.



Stoppani’s example that he provides in his own overreaching program[4] involves using a gene that results in muscle growth. Say this particular gene is boosted 100% its original level following a workout, and then slowly drops by 25% each day until returning to normal. In most training routines you end up not focusing on the same muscle group until about 4 or 5 days later – longer in some cases – which means the gene always returns back to its normal state. If you decide to work out 2 days later, when the gene is at 50% above its normal level, you could potentially bump it up to 150%. Training this way for short periods of time leads to greater muscle growth and strength gains than if you had waited until the following week to hit the same muscle group again.

The Anabolic Protocol isn’t your 10-minute “quick fix” type of program. You will be indeed working out longer than half an hour multiple days a week. If you were willing to spend only half an hour while you have a gym membership, it probably isn’t even worth your having a membership.

Most of the time required to follow The Anabolic Protocol can be generalized to 4 to 5 workouts per week, lasting just about 60 minutes, plus 1 hour of meal prep per week to prepare all your meals outlined in the Nutrition Manual.

We designed The Anabolic Protocol to be extremely simple and easy to stick with, but it does require a certain degree of perseverance and commitment. After reading The Anabolic Protocol people forget about quick fixes forever and embrace this as a permanent way of life.
