The Development of Search Engines and the Birth of Black Hat SEO

Once upon a time, long long ago when Man created the Internet, became the birth of the primitive Search Engine. Those were the days...search engines were so easy to spam - just whacking a few hundred keywords on a page would do the trick back then, the search engines primitive algorithms just depended on how many times that word or phrase being searched for, was on a web page - and would rank those pages accordingly - meaning if a search was done for "shoes" then the page which appeared first in their results would just be the page with the word shoes on the most times - Web site owners soon cottoned on to this and "Keyword Spam" was born.

Search Engines had to evolve to take this into account, other techniques developed, Search Engines developed even more - however now into 21st Century, techniques to fool the Search Engines are becoming more aggressive, more widespread and easier to adopt.

Black Hat webmasters appear because of the nature of search engine algorithms. Having started White Hat, and probably putting a lot of effort into a web site over a long period of time - they see very little results. This is because search engine algorithms - which decide a web site's position on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) are mainly based upon the popularity of a web site. The popularity of a web site basically meaning how many other web pages link to that site and the popularity of those pages.

The average web site owner soon realized that getting a web site to link to his was a never-ending task of searching the web, looking for related sites that may want to list his site - and even trading links with other sites.  However, Search Engines soon got wind of this "Links Trading" and decided not to place so much significance when two web sites were found scratching each other's backs. Hence, the web site owner now had to find web sites that would link to his - without him having to return the favor.

Because of this - "Links Selling" was born. Those web sites that had financial muscle - could now "buy" their way to success, by purchasing links on high ranking pages. This took the Internet to another new level, a level where money became the currency of success. Many web site owners - having invested a great deal of time and effort in their web sites began to see their site fail - their positions in SERPS dropped while those web site owners who "invested" in purchasing links began to dominate SERPS. - So because of the discontent at all the big companies beginning to dominate SERPS The "Black Hat" webmaster was born.

Instead of wasting months of time making great web pages full of unique content - Black Hat webmasters began making pages especially designed for complicated search strings. Because of the literally millions upon trillions of possible combinations of phrase searches, these webmasters began to have some success. The basis of this was the webmaster would use a keyword tool to find phrases which people had been inputting into Search Engines and then make one page especially optimized for that phrase. Because the phrases were so obscure then it meant competition for that phrase was either non existent or very low - meaning that page would probably appear on the first page of SERPS for that phrase, and in many cases even in first place, without the webmaster needing hundreds or thousands of other web sites linking to that page - just a small handful of links would do the trick.

Fo example - if a website was selling shoes then the possiblitlies are endless - a surfer could search for "Black leather boots", "Patent leather shoes size 5" , or "Mans brogues buy online in UK".. the possiblitlies are absolutely endless.

Techniques soon developed for webmasters to computer generate an entire web site's using software, either by using snippets of other web sites on their pages to make it look like a legitimate directory (AKA Data Mining, Scraping, Scraper Site, Doorway Pages), or by using a huge database of uncopyrighted articles. Sometimes the software allowed the webmaster to make tens of thousands of pages in just a few hours - with each page specifically made for a different keyword phrase.

Then they found vulnerable places on the Internet where they were able to leave links to their sites - giving them free one way links.

This combination allowed Black Hat webmasters to compete with the Big Boys, and in many cases even surpass them.

The Black Hat webmaster would justify his spammy practices by saying that he has spent hardly any money, time or effort and yet he has a 30,000 page web site in SERPS bringing in lots of traffic and making lots of money. Even if some of those pages are only bringing in one visitor per week - you can be sure other pages are bringing in dozens every day - and this lethal combination meant tens of thousands of visitors every week, either being redirected to an affiliate (thin affiliate site), where the webmaster can earn a commission if a purchase is made, or being presented with sponsored links, where the webmaster would earn a commission every time an ad is clicked.

Hence the ever growing community of Black Hat webmasters.

White Hat webmasters however would point to the fact that Black Hat web sites are a time-bomb. It only takes one person to complain about the site to a Search Engine and the site can get banned. The Black Hat webmaster would reply that it doesn't matter if his web site gets banned - it cost next to nothing - and what's more he's probably got another 20 on the go anyway - meaning a steady stream of income - and more often than not, by the time the site has been banned it has probably been up and running for a good few months anyway, and in many cases even longer. Also the Black Hat webmaster would say that being banned from one Search Engine does not mean the life of the web site is over - there's more than one Search Engine - and they do not collaborate.

The Black Hat would also point out that for the White Hat webmaster to have this kind of success would mean them first designing a web site full of thousands of pages of unique content, which itself could take years, then either sitting in front of the computer begging for links for months and months on end - or - investing in purchasing links, which could prove quite costly, (Yahoo Directory alone costs $299), - and even then with months or even years of effort, success would still not be guaranteed.

Search Engines Fighting Back

Because of this, today's Internet has filled with billions of pages of spam from the ever growing community of Black Hat webmasters. Search Engines are fighting a losing battle. Every day they ban tens of thousands of web sites from their indexes - but on the same day EVEN more reappear, and with the sheer volume of these web sites making it unviable to send a human visitor to each one to decide if the content is legitimate or not, search engines attempt to develop algorithms to try to detect these spammy web sites - however in their desperate attempts - other legitimate web sites are being caught up in the algorithm and getting dropping in SERPS or even banned - hence the birth of Negative SEO or Googlebowling.

Negative SEO - "Googlebowling"

Quote from Googles webmaster guidelines page :-

Fiction: A competitor can ruin a site's ranking somehow or have another site removed from Google's index.
Fact: There's almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. Your rank and your inclusion are dependent on factors under your control as a webmaster, including content choices and site design.

Note carefully the wording of the quote - "There's almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking...."

Come on Google, change your statement to -  "There is absolutely nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking..."

Well Google - here are the FACTS

A competitor CAN harm the ranking of a web site in Google, I have proven this by deliberately getting one of my White Hat web sites de-indexed by employing certain techniques - techniques which left no footprints as to who made them, and techniques that could have been done by anyone sitting at a computer anywhere in the world...and the reason WHY this can be done is because of your algorithm which affects a pages position in SERPS and their Google Pagerank when certain off site Black Hat practices are used to promote that site.

I will stand by that in any court of law and even provide proof.
