Imagine going to a cafe like I did on my last visit to Korea and
getting this receipt.
Would you know what it says? Would you be able to understand
아메리카노? Could you guess that it actually says _Americano_?
The Korean language has a phonetic alphabet and many of its sounds
correspond to those in English.
It's very straightforward.
Here's an example - the word for "_Korean alphabet_" in Korean:
한글 (_HAN GEUL_)
With some simple training, you'll be able to see that this is
composed as follows:
ㅎ (H) + ㅏ (AH) + ㄴ (N) = HAN (한)
ㄱ (g) + ㅡ (eu) + ㄹ (l) = geul (글)
One other interesting thing is that many modern Korean words and
signs simply use English terms and transliterate them into a form
using the Korean alphabet.
Take the example again from the picture of the above receipt.
아메리카노 may look strange, but once you learn how to read this
script, you'll see that it can easily be broken down as follows:
아 - AH
메 - MEH
리 - RI
카 - KA
노 - NO
_Americano. _This one's just like the English, but with a different
script!
