“They Laughed When I Started Playing the Didgeridoo – But When I Cured My Sleep Apnea…”

From the Desk of:
Marc MacDonald, M.Sc.
Independent Sleep Apnea Researcher

Dear Fellow Sleep Apnea Sufferer,

If you’re reading this letter, you’re probably sick of struggling with your CPAP, and fed up with suffering from sleep apnea.

You know that there are alternative treatments to sleep apnea out there, treatments that are easier, quicker, and cheaper than CPAP and surgery. But your doctor (and the healthcare industry in general) can’t – or won’t – share information with you on those treatments.

Well, I’m here today to tell that such treatments do exist, and there’s one in particular that is easy and inexpensive to do, that can be done in the comfort of your own home, and is actually FUN. (Yes, fun!)

This treatment has been tested in scientific trials and has been written about in the prestigious British Medical Journal. It has also been recommended by the Mayo Clinic and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. (I’ll tell you more about that in a second.)

What’s the treatment? The didgeridoo.

“The didgeri-what?”, I can hear you saying. That’s what most people say!

Allow me to explain what this ancient Australian wind instrument is, and how it’s been scientifically proven to cure sleep apnea by strengthening a person’s upper airway.

What Exactly is a Didgeridoo?

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/didgeridoo1.jpg)The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago. The didgeridoo (also know as a “didge”) is still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world. Rock paintings on caves in Australia have established that the didgeridoo has been used as a musical instrument for at least 20,000 years.

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/man_playing_didgeridoo.jpg)Didgeridoos are generally long cylinders (well over 1 yard/1 meter), made out of branches that have been naturally hollowed out by termites (although many people use a cheaper version of the didge that can be made using simple material bought from a hardware store).

The sound that comes out of a didge when it’s played is made by vibrating, or flapping, the lips continuously while blowing into the didgeridoo.

How Does the Didgeridoo Cure Sleep Apnea (and Snoring)?

Before explaining how playing the didgeridoo can cure your sleep apnea, it’s important to know HOW sleep apnea occurs. Allow me to explain:

The vast majority of people with sleep apnea suffer from what’s called “obstructive sleep apnea”, or OSA.

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tissues in your upper throat relax and collapse together while you’re sleeping. This blocks the air’s passage temporarily.

Here’s how it happens while you’re asleep:
Travelling to the lungs, the air will make its journey via the nose, mouth and throat (all known as the ‘upper airway’) Normally the rear of a person’s throat is soft and naturally falls inward when they breathe. Muscles in the throat will be working against the collapse, trying to maintain an open airway. When the tissues at the rear of the throat collapse and become temporarily blocked off, apnea will happen and the person’s breathing is halted (“apnea” is a Greek word that means “cessation of breath”).

There’s also a connection with snoring here. Flabby tissues in the mouth and throat not only collapse when you fall asleep. They also VIBRATE – which is what causes snoring.

So the key to conquering obstructive sleep apnea (and snoring) is to have STRONG muscles to keep your throat open while you sleep.

How can you build up strong muscles in your upper airway? You guessed it – by playing the didgeridoo!

Simply put, playing the didgeridoo strengthens and tones the tissues of the throat, and can also provide good exercise for the respiratory system, as well as a meditation aid.

But just blowing through a pipe won’t cure your sleep apnea. Key is a special breathing technique called “circular breathing”. This involves breathing in through the nose while expelling air out of the mouth using the tongue and cheeks.

Proof That Playing the Didgeridoo Cures Sleep Apnea

I know what you’re probably thinking at this point: “playing the didgeridoo seems so simple. How do I know it actually works in curing sleep apnea?”

It’s a little-known fact that in 2006 a scientific study was carried out at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. The results of that study were published in the British Medical Journal. Here’s the information you need to know on that study:

Study Objective: To assess the effects of didgeridoo playing on daytime sleepiness and other outcomes related to sleep by reducing collapsibility of the upper airways in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and snoring

Method Used: Twenty-five patients aged 18 years and above with an apnoea-hypopnoea index between 15 and 30 were given private lessons on the didgeridoo at a center for sleep medicine. Participants practiced the didgeridoo an average of 25 minutes a day, six days a week.

Results: Compared with the control group, the participants practicing the didgeridoo experienced:
Significantly lower daytime sleepiness Significantly improved apnea-hypopnea index Bed partners reported less sleep disturbance
Conclusion: The authors of the study concluded the “Regular didgeridoo playing is an effective treatment alternative well accepted by patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome”.

To read more about this study, please click this link: [Didgeridoo playing as alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome: randomised controlled trial](http://www.bmj.com/content/332/7536/266)

In years since that study, the didgeridoo has also caught the attention of prestigious medical organizations, who now endorse the instrument as a viable treatment for sleep apnea:

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/national_institutes_of_health.jpg)The U.S. National Institutes of Health says, “One of the challenges in the treatment of sleep disorders is poor compliance. Thus new treatments not only need to be effective but also be ones that people are motivated enough to use. Didgeridoo playing seems to meet these requirements. Participants were highly motivated during the trial and practiced, on average, almost six days a week, which was even more than the protocol asked for. Regular playing of a didgeridoo reduces sleep apnea and snoring in people with moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and also improves the sleep quality of partners. Severity of disease, expressed by the apnea-hypopnoea index, is also substantially reduced after four months of didgeridoo playing.”

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dr_rubin_naiman.jpg)“Learning to play the didgeridoo is emerging as a surprisingly effective and practical strategy for managing snoring and sleep apnea symptoms. I encourage all my patients with these concerns to discuss this option with their doctors.”

Rubin Naiman, PhD., Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Arizona

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dr_oz.jpg)Dr. Oz, of TV fame, [recommends the didgeridoo for sleep apnea](http://abcnews.go.com/Health/dr-ozs-health-boosting-secrets-world/story?id=14205403) “to exercise the muscles in the back of the throat that cause snoring while you sleep. Those muscles get lax while you sleep so, by exercising them with the didgeridoo, essentially a branch hollowed out by termites that turns into an instrument, you strengthen the muscles so they don’t collapse while you sleep.”

[](http://www.didgeridooforsleepapnea.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/mayo_clinic_book_of_home_remedies.jpg)The Mayo Clinic also recommends didgeridoo for sleep apnea in a recent book titled “The Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies” (2010).

Exercises That Will Cure Your Sleep Apnea AND Your Snoring!

Here’s another great thing about didgeridoo therapy for sleep apnea: it also cures snoring.

Why?

Because sleep apnea and snoring are often caused by the same thing: flabby throat tissue.

In the case of sleep apnea, the flabby throat tissue causes the airway to close when you’re asleep.

In the case of snoring, the flabby throat tissue vibrates while you’re asleep (especially if you breathe through your mouth while sleeping). It’s that vibration that makes you snore!

Many sleep apnea sufferers also have a snoring problem. So playing the didgeridoo can kill two birds with one stone!

THROW AWAY YOUR CPAP IN 20 MINUTES PER DAY!

So I’ll bet your next question is: “How long do I have to spend playing the didgeridoo”

Here’s the great news: results have been seen with as little as 25 minutes of playing each day. In fact, the participants in the University of Zurich study spent just an average of 25 minutes per day playing their didgeridoos.

The bottom line? Expect to spend approximately 25 minutes per day doing the exercises – at first. Once you see improvement in your sleep apnea, you can choose to reduce the amount of time spent playing.

Here’s what other people have to say about this fun and easy new sleep apnea treatment:

“I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about two years ago. I followed the usual path of getting hooked up to a ventilating machine which, for me, was a bit of hell on earth. I know people who regain sleep and dreams again because of the machine, but I had a different experience.

I went through several different masks and nostril pads trying to find the right fit without success. Even though it was a quiet machine, the sound of air pushing through the mask made a Darth Vader rumble that caused my wife to sleep in another room by the third night. I often found myself awake listening to the swoosh of my own breathing. And when I did sleep, I sometimes woke noticing I wasn’t breathing, waiting for the machine to engage, to force air into my lungs, until I finally realized I had better take a breath.

After a tired month of trying, I packed up the machine, called my doctor and asked for a different approach. He referred me to a research article that claimed didgeridoo playing helped a small group of patients reduce their apnea episodes.  I figured that if practicing didgeridoo for 15-30 minutes a day could reverse my sleep-apnea and keep me off that machine, it was worth trying.

I ordered my first didgeridoo online. The results have been life altering. I have more energy throughout the day. I sleep better at night, and I dream again. It took about a week of playing 30-60 minutes a day (I was a bit of a zealot—I wanted to be healthy again!) before I noticed a change. I don’t know anyone who plays nearby, so I watched and listened to YouTube videos (thanks to all of you out there teaching so generously online!).

I didn’t worry about sounding good. I just experimented with sounds and kept the drone going. I eventually learned circular breathing, and that opened up the possibilities. I continue to play for 15-30 minutes every day, although I miss a day or two every now and then without any noticeable difference in my sleep. But I travel as part of my work, and occasionally have missed several days in a row. Each time my snoring has gotten louder and I begin feeling run down. But after a day or two of practicing, I return to sound sleep…”

“My CPAP machine was a problem, there was no keeping it on all night, a pain. Well I was researching Australia and New Zealand news and found an article describing sleep apnea therapy that “cured” or reduced apnea. I tried it and it worked. My apnea is gone, my COPD is reduced blood o2 is up, what more could I want. I bought my didgeridoo from Amazon as well as how to play book. My sleep apnea is gone. This works.”

Greg Wasilewski

“Many people have the same problems with sleep apnea that plagued me, I would panic when putting on the mask and ripping it off in the night, not good.

After a little accidental research my apnea is GONE. While looking for Australian news, there was a reference to apnea treatment and the didgeridoo, the funny sounding instrument played by native Australians. Following up on the reference there is a treatment for apnea that works!

To make a long story short I played the didgeridoo for about 3 months and asked for a retest of my apnea and I was found to be marginal, the tech did not find a symptom they could treat, and the apnea mask went into the back of the closet….”

BUT DO I HAVE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY TO BUY A FANCY DIDGERIDOO?

That’s a great question, and the short answer is NO! It’s a common misconception that you have to buy an expensive, fancy didgeridoo to practice with. The fact is, you can actually make your own didgeridoo with materials that cost under $10 and can be found in any hardware store!

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M PLAYING THE DIDGERIDOO CORRECTLY?

As I mentioned earlier, you can’t just grab a tube and start blowing into it, and expect to see your sleep apnea disappear. Strengthening your upper airway requires targeted practice, guided by an expert.

By not learning how to play the didge properly from the start you risk wasting months of effort.

So how can you learn to play the didgeridoo the right way, right away, in the comfort of your own home?

Why Should You Listen to Me? How I Became an Expert in Sleep Apnea Treatments…

My introduction to sleep apnea began on the night of August 26th, 2007. My wife and I were asleep in bed and something happened that would change my life forever.

At 2:00am that evening, my wife abruptly sat up, gasping for air. It was as if she was dreaming about being chased! Suddenly she sat bolt upright in bed. She was choking for air, and completely disoriented. She didn’t know where she was.

That incident was repeated many times in the coming months. Every night, her breath stopping and she gasping for air. What we didn’t know at the time was that my wife had the classic symptoms of sleep apnea.

But my wife’s problems didn’t stop at night. During the day, she was chronically fatigued – sometimes falling asleep just by sitting down on the couch. I was so concerned about her constant tiredness that I was scared she was going to crash our car!

We both knew it wasn’t natural to be so tired all of the time. And we also suspected that gagging while asleep pointed to some health problem. But at the time we didn’t even know about sleep apnea. We were soon to find out many surprising facts about this silent killer…

In the months following that fateful night I spent hundreds of hours researching sleep apnea treatments. I share what I’ve learned on my catalog site, which you can visit here: http://www.ApneaTreatmentCatalog.com).

Here’s what people have said about my sleep apnea treatment guides:

“Marc….thanks for the good read. It will become a ‘must read’ for those who want to learn about sleep apnea treatments.”
S. Stevens, Brisbane, Australia

“This is great advice, which I intend to follow. I love the way you approach the topic — from apnea to alternative treatments, from mild to dramatic.
It is not missing from your book, but I just want to mention that sleep position can be very dramatic. (You might want to push that a little in future editions.) For example, after 4 months with ***** and ***** units, with and without auto CPAP, I discovered that my AHI went from 20 to 40 to one (!) by sleeping on my side, not my back.

Thank you for a great contribution, Marc!”

C. Burke, San Bernandino, U.S.A.

“Thanks for all the useful information you forwarded to me, it’s pleasing to know that I’m not alone in this dilemma and there are alternatives, which gives me hope. Thanks for the work you do, really appreciate people like you who challenge beliefs and subscriptions from the medical field, which some of us just accept – and not to our personal or financial benefit at all.”
