I want to tell you about the circumstances that led to that revelation. But I really hate to write this because it’s SO, SO embarrassing.
Have you ever made a decision that in hindsight was dumb, dumb, dumb?
Like … eating two week old leftovers from the fridge.
They taste good at the time, but leave you getting closely acquainted with the porcelain throne for the rest of the day/week.
That's where I was at in my internet biz …
I'd built the WHOLE thing up from nothing and was CRUSHING it.
I was topping product launch leaderboards left, right, and center …
… and I was having regular 4 and 5 figure months!
But I built it on some BAD assumptions and the results were MUCH worse than throwing up bad leftovers
By trade, I'm a roofer. It's hot HEAVY work. Besides marketing online, it's the only thing I know how to do.
The problem is … I have a bad back.
I hurt myself on the job back in 2008. I fell THROUGH a roof. It seriously HURT.
Every time I moved I was in pain. And when I tried to bend over to lay a roof tile, the pain would FLARE to the point of bringing tears to my eyes.
I couldn't even make love to my girlfriend. I was SO exhausted from "working through the pain" and honestly … it hurt too much.
How she put up with my cranky miserable self during that time, I'll never know. But I'm SO thankful to her for seeing me through.
It was BAD, BAD, BAD. But it was also … motivating.
I KNEW I couldn't go on like that. Every day I was dying a little bit
And that's when I spotted those leftovers and decided it would be a GOOD IDEA to eat them.
In an effort to get out of the roofing industry, I'd started "playing around online". I had a MASSIVE amount of failure at first.
THEN I heard about "list building". And I started building and marketing to a list. I *also* started making money hand over fist.
I went from earning $0 to over $400 per day!
That's when I quit my roofing job the first time. (BIG MISTAKE)
FACT: If you build a business based on bad assumptions it WILL fall apart.
I didn't know I was building an affiliate marketing business DOOMED to failure. It was the "two week old leftovers" for sure. What I was doing looked good and "tasted good", but the end results SUCKED.
My business started spewing. Paypal closed my account without warning and I lost 80% of my income overnight. (BTW. This can happen to ANYBODY – beware of keeping all your eggs in one basket)
It was painful. But I thought I had it handled.
After all I had a list and the money is in the list, right?
I started promoting every major product launch to my list just to try and make ends meet
Dumb, dumb dumb. I burned out my list before I had an opportunity to say "boo".
They unsubscribed. They ignored my emails. They wrote me HATE mail.
I wasn't making any money, because I viewed the people on my list as a commodity and not as PEOPLE.
Big dumb mistake. And one I'll NEVER repeat.
FACT: The money isn't in "the list", the money is in YOUR RELATIONSHIP with the list.
I moped, I fumed, I got depressed.
And THAT'S when I had to call it quits. I NEEDED to make money. I went back to roofing (with a bad back).
BUT … I didn't give up.
I worked as a roofer (again). In TONS of pain. But only for a short time. :)
I worked my ass off re-building my affiliate marketing business in the evenings and weekends. Gradually I built my income back up again to the point where I even had a $10K day! …
I quit my job as a roofer (for the second "this time for real" time)
I owe my "freedom" to affiliate marketing.
Now … I spend lots of time with my family and do WHAT I WANT to do.
