Greetings y’all. It’s David Grewe, Founder of Potential Meets

competitive world of sports. I was a collegiate athlete and coach for
17 years in the sport of baseball.
As a Big Ten head coach at MSU, we took a bottom-end team, dominated
by internal issues and parental problems, and built the program
foundation by building a brand new $4M stadium and a $1.5M practice
facility. We also built the foundation by recruiting and coaching the
Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Year, along with the schools

In the years 2009-2011, I was the nation’s only baseball recruiter
to land three straight top-7 ranked recruiting classes. I even called
the final pitch and won a National Championship while coaching three
All-American pitchers in one season – a feat never been done before
at LSU.
Those are some great moments. But I have also encountered many
challenges and failures. And as Coach K so eloquently put it
(following a 1st round loss, to a 14-seed Lehigh team) “The game
for me has taken me to incredible highs . . . the game will also take
you to incredible lows . . . that’s part of being in the game. The
game is a beautiful game.” - Coach Mike Krzyzewski
All of us coaches have experienced extreme highs and extreme lows.
That’s what separates coaches from other so-called experts.
Perspective and truth is everything!
Over my coaching career and specifically during my recruiting days, I
experienced both the process, and the effects, of winning and losing
at the highest level. I also witnessed the consequences that both have
on the student-athletes.
And with that, I have set out to help erase any negative side
effects, and focus on the positive. Be a difference maker for the next
generation. Truth, the passion to compete on the field, and win with
ethics, will always be there. It never leaves a coach. But I wanted
something bigger . . . I wanted to do something better and escape what
coaches call “_THE GRIND_”. I wanted to do something beyond just
the field. I wanted to coach for the reason why I entered the
profession. And in order this, I had to give up something (I really
loved) for something I wanted more. Some colleagues announced that I
wouldn’t last beyond year 2, but it took year 3 to realize that my
unique perspective shined an extremely bright light on things.
This change actually came during a season when I announced my
resignation (at the seasons end) to our athletic director. I made the
decision that I wanted “something more / something better”. This
was very difficult to do, but my strong loyalty to my players and the
institution led me to finish my responsibilities and continue till the
end of the year. Ironically, it was at this point that our team went
on to win 6 of our last 7 games and our pitchers (_I was the pitching
coach_) recorded a 1.80 era with 2 shutouts, as we implemented an
all-freshman weekend rotation. (Note: 1st time ever in history of LSU
baseball program). We had great success and ended our season by
developing young players. And perspective was everything.
My decision to resign was very tough, but with the right intentions
– my loyalty to the players and program. One of my goals was to
provide time for the program to replace my position with a qualified
coach, because our pitching staff and roster was loaded with
championship level players (top draft picks and SEC player of the
year). In college baseball, we call them "_OMAHA BOYS_".
And, I share my story with you to prove that I have walked in your
(desired) shoes. I know what athletes and coaches seek to accomplish,
and I know what challenges they face! See, I have a perspective that
very few have. I am the only leadership development coach for athletes
that has the following background: I've gone from being an Assistant
Coach, to a Head Coach, to an Associate Head Coach (essentially, back
to an assistant coach), all at the Division I BCS level. Plus, I've
experienced the ride to and from winning a National Championship. I
call this my train ride to the Big Apple (212 - holding #2 role - then
#1 role - then #2 role again). I use this analogy because the
temperature at which steam is created is 212 degrees. And we know
stream can power a locomotive, thus, my train ride! I hold a unique
perspective that very few are fortunate to have, and I feel blessed
because of IT!
