If You Want To Establish A Set Of Best Practices For Your Team that will result in:

Faster Development

Improved Maintainability

Better Performance

*and Less Meetings!

Then Please Pay Attention To What I Am About To Tell You…

From the Desk of Phil Steffek,
Data Architect, Director Of Reporting And AnalyticsRe: SQL Best Practices
Dear Data Architect,

If you are reading this letter then it is likely that you have a passion. You have a passion for database development.

You and your team combined have spent literally hundreds of hours (and based on your hourly rates $1,000s of dollars!) discussing standards and best practices for database development.  If you’ve been tasked with documenting best practices and getting consensus from all the stakeholders you know it’s going to be a huge initiative.  In fact, most efforts to establish database development best practices eventually fail due to the excessive time and energy requirements.

I understand your pain because I’ve been there too many times to count!  As a SQL consultant and as a technical team lead I was frequently asked to establish standards for database development.  In fact, within one software development firm, senior management had me attempt to document their best practices three separate times.  In each case the project was eventually scrapped as members of the team fought amongst themselves regarding obscure legacy naming conventions.  What if I told you that you can get the job done cheaper, faster and without headaches using my proven SQL best practices?

Adopting Best Practices Will Save You Time and $$$
On Your Next Database Project…

Here’s the BIG problem:  Most so-called best practices are complete garbage.

Why?  They skip over core principals, assuming everyone already agrees on them, provide vague guidance which is easily misinterpreted, and then concentrate on defining how to handle obscure minutiae.  In the end most developers ignore the entire document.  No wonder most of these initiatives fail!

I’ve reviewed dozens of “draft” or “in progress” versions of SQL best practices and the majority of them left me with more questions than answers.

There Is A Faster & Easier Way To Establish Your SQL Best Practices!

Luckily for you, these problems become a blessing in disguise because I have spent the last five years compiling a SQL Server best practices guide with clear, detailed, guidance which will give your team everything they need to create an effective set of best practices that will speed your development time, streamline code reviews, and simultaneously improve performance and maintainability.
Introducing…

“The Definitive Guide To SQL Database Development and Design Best Practices”

With specific best practices covering table design, query writing, stored procedure development, and more.
These are the best practices which every team should be following.
Concise and clear-cut guidance organized in an easy to navigate manner which will accelerate all aspects of SQL Server database development…

With The SQL Best Practices Guide you get…

Specific best practices which you can begin implementing immediately.
This package contains guidance which is clearly and specifically stated.  They are written in a manner which makes them easy to communicate to junior members of your team as well as making them simple to share with developers who are external to your group.

Our proven “Do, Consider, Avoid, Do not” guidance accelerates adoption

Most best practice documents contain sections which leave the user wondering if the guidance was telling them to “do” something or “do not”.  Our proven format provides specific guidance, written in terms which leave no room for multiple interpretations.  Listen, no other SQL best practices package on the market is as specific as this and this was one of the major reasons I created this.

Your Skill Level Doesn’t Matter!

Our custom best practices guidelines are designed to get the job done quickly, effectively, the result being a data model and stored procedures which will impress any professional SQL architect.  By following these best practices you can be certain your product will attain these superior results EVERY TIME.  Even if you are just starting your SQL career, or you are being asked to temporarily serve as your team’s data architect you can be certain the guidance you have used for your design and development is the same as if you’d had an MVP looking over your shoulder.

This is NOT a novel.  Just 18 pages=reviewable in a single sitting

Part of the formula for the successful adoption of my best practices is the short and concise nature of SQL Best Practices.  SQL Best Practices has been boiled down to only 18 pages cover to cover.  This means members of your team can sit down and read SQL Best Practices in well under an hour.  This has proven to be substantially more effective than creating a lengthy novel that no one has the time or the energy to read.

Here’s What You Can Expect To Find:

The truth is, software developers, data architects, SQL developers, and technical leads at all levels of their careers have benefited greatly from this package and testimonials like these started to flow into my email inbox:

A Lifesaver!

You’re a lifesaver!  Our code reviews (and our code) is faster than ever.  We are also starting to see faster turnaround on production bugs since more of our code has a standard look and feel.  Prior to implementing the standards in your Best Practices all our developers were writing their stored procedures completely differently from everyone else.  Every code review was a pain since most of the meeting was wasted with people bickering over error handling syntax…

The New Industry Standard

As a SQL Server consultant, visiting many client sites over the course of the year I can only hope SQL Server Best Practices becomes an industry standard.  So much of my clients time and dollars is wasted simply because a lack of standards has resulted in consistently poor performing designs being propagated throughout a system.

Outsource Salvation

I’d guess you don’t get very many project managers purchasing your product but perhaps more should!  I’m supervising an offshore development team and code quality was a consistent problem, generally manifesting with poor performing queries which would take our tech lead hours to troubleshoot.  I could see we were going to start missing deadlines left and right.  I purchased the SQL Best Practices and sent a copy to the team.  I’d estimate the quality of our code has increased by 75%.  My tech lead’s review time has also dropped significantly.  Perhaps most importantly our offshore team was able to begin implementing the best practices the day they received them!

Check out a brief sample from Section 3 of SQL Best Practices:

3. Tables
3.1 General Guidelines

Do explicitly define a primary key on all tables.

Do explicitly define a unique domain key (aka Natural Key or Business Key) on each table.

Do specify schema name when creating objects.

Do explicitly name all constraints, indexes and keys (e.g. default constraints, foreign keys, check constraints, etc.). If a name is not specified SQL Server will generate an alphanumeric name which will differ in each environment the object is created in. Providing a specific name allows the object to be explicitly dropped or modified via a script. It also allows for easy comparison across environments.

Do not use SQL keywords for object or column names (e.g. Role, Rank, Select, User, File, Avg, Sum, etc) Note: using a keyword as part of a name is acceptable, for example “UserRole”.

3.2 Columns

Do use the smallest feasible data type for each column. This improves performance, storage requirements, and data quality.

Do name foreign key columns with the same column name as the primary key column. For example: If the primary key is a column called ClaimID, the foreign key column should also be named ClaimID.

Do set columns to NOT NULL wherever feasible.

Do prefix non-descriptive column names with the table name to improve clarity. For example, in a table called “Organization”, instead of naming the columns ID and Name, name the columns OrganizationId and OrganizationName. This makes queries where multiple tables are joined together easier to understand.

$40 per hour * 4 hours=$160

If you assume that the average mid level database developer costs approximately $40 per hour (probably a low estimate in most markets) and if you assume the SQL Best Practices Guide will save you at least half a day’s works (a ridiculously low estimate if you consider it will be used by your entire team across multiple years) the value of this document would be at least 160 dollars.  I know, I know, these numbers are way too low!  Feel free to send me your feedback on how much time and money it’s saved your team.  So here’s the bottom line: If you have read this far, you only have one question left…
