My Story
You’re still reading? I guess that means you want to know more about me. Well let me tell you a story with my introduction.
My name is Joshua Johnson – I used to be an artist…
That sounds a bit off, doesn’t it? Well, it’s true.
In high school I was obsessed with art. I took every art class that was offered, including advanced placement classes. I even got published!
In the end, I was voted most artistic (male) of the class, along with a very good friend of mine – Sarah Shay.
Then I went to college.
I had always enjoyed computers – so I thought a good pairing of my two hobbies would be a good idea. I (regretfully) pursued and completed a degree in graphic design.
Pursuing graphic design is still a sore spot with me. Don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed the education. But design and art are two very different fields with a similar skill set.
I found this out the hard way – when I picked up the pencil to sketch something about 4 years ago. I simply could not draw what I wanted.
This was a nightmare come true.
I had let computers and higher education rob me of my skill and creativity as an artist. I had become a designer.
This discouraged me for quite some time – I went almost an entire year without picking up another sketchbook for an artistic endeavor.
But when I did pick up that sketchbook again…I still failed.
Why? Because creating art is not like riding a bike. If you don’t use it – you lose it.
Talk about a harsh reality check.
But I didn’t give up.
I set out on a mission to correct this horrible injustice to my passion. I set out to re-learn how to draw.
Books, tutorials, local workshops, classes…You name it, I tried it.
Thousands of dollars and a few years later and I still consider myself a student. It was difficult to accept until I realized that I’m always going to be a student.
All great teachers are great students.
So I will continue to be a student and a teacher. But art school is expensive. I’ve been through the ringer already and I don’t want others to pay such a steep price.
It has become my mission to create an excellent art education environment – one where I can continue to learn myself and share what I learn with other artists – at a reasonable price that won’t hurt a starving artist’s wallet.
