NEVER FEEL INTIMIDATED, CONFUSED OR FRUSTRATED BY WINE AGAIN!

DISCOVER HOW EVERYONE ELSE IS ATTAINING CONFIDENCE AND EASE WITH WINE!

LET'S FACE IT WINE IS A BEVERAGE TO BE ENJOYED WITH OTHER PEOPLE, AND
KNOWLEDGE OF IT TRANSLATES TO CONFIDENCE AND EASE IN MANY DIFFERENT
SOCIAL SITUATIONS:

COMMON SOCIAL SITUATIONS WITH WINE

DINNER PARTIES, HOLIDAY PARTIES, COCKTAIL PARTIES, NETWORKING MIXERS

ENTERTAINING CLIENTS, BUSINESS LUNCHES taste wines with Sonoma
winemakers in their home; enjoy a privately catered lunch at a Napa
winery, and also with a Sonoma winemaker and his wife in their own
kitchen; and even stay overnight on Napa winery property in a guest
cottage where the sliding glass door opened out to the vineyard!

Over the years, many people have shared with me how confused,
frustrated, intimidated and even ashamed they felt about wine and some
of them also shared with me how they would _avoid attending_ the types
of social events pictured above, or would _avoid engaging_ in
conversations with certain people because _they were self-conscious
about their awkwardness around wine_.

Equally interesting, most of them also shared with me they wanted to
learn more about wine in spite of how they felt about it.

I can remember those days - shying away from interactions and
conversations with others because of my awkwardness around wine.  And
yet, being in the restaurant business, I was also responsible for
_selling_ it!  I hated that feeling - talk about being in a catch-22!

What if YOU are missing out on potential connections, friendships,
business opportunities or romantic encounters because you're
self-conscious about your awkwardness around wine?  What is that
costing YOU?

Nowadays, it's becoming easier and easier for people to hide out
online behind their social media or dating profiles but eventually
relationships are forged when meeting _in person_, often in social
situations pictured above.
MEETING PEOPLE FACE-TO-FACE IS THE _ORIGINAL_ SOCIAL NETWORKING.

I ended up on a very indirect path developing my knowledge and
skills, spending the better part of a decade.  Along the way I began
teaching others.  Just like any other topic, I learned more about
wine by _teaching_ it than I did by _studying_ it.

Learning about wine and wine tasting is like solving an elusive
riddle.  Between my experience and observations over thousands of
conversations, I deduced there are 4 KEYS TO ATTAIN CONFIDENCE AND
EASE WITH WINE:

KEY #1 - WINE MUST BE LEARNED BY _DIRECT EXPERIENCE_

Unfortunately, wine can't be learned just by reading and talking
about it - even if you spend hours upon hours reading about it from
books, magazines, blogs or wine websites … or talking about it with
your friends. Imagine the following 9 scenarios:

* Reading and talking _about_ driving a car vs. actually _DRIVING a
car_
* Reading and talking _about_ living abroad vs. actually _LIVING
abroad_
* Reading and talking _about_ losing weight vs. actually _LOSING
weight_
* Reading and talking _about_ playing guitar vs. actually _PLAYING
guitar_
* Reading and talking _about_ writing a book vs. actually _WRITING a
book_
* Reading and talking _about_ going on a date vs. actually _GOING on
a date_
* Reading and talking _about_ getting married vs. actually _GETTING
married_
* Reading and talking _about_ having children vs. actually _HAVING
children_
* Reading and talking _about_ owning a business vs. actually _OWNING
a business_

What's the difference between the _first_ and _second_ example in all
9 scenarios?

* The _first_ example is from a 3RD-PERSON, _detached_ perspective
of a SPECTATOR that is NOT producing the result
* The _second_ example is from a 1ST-PERSON, _direct_ perspective of
a PARTICIPANT that IS producing the result

How many people do you know read or talk _about_ doing something
they've wanted to do for months or years, and _never_ get started?

Isn't it likely that the participant will _feel more confident_ than
the spectator?

Learning wine and wine tasting is _exactly_ the same as all 9
scenarios above.

Can we all agree right now that we're going to _directly_ experience
wine as a _participant_ instead of indirectly reading and talking
_about_ wine like a _spectator_?  Awesome.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE AGREED TO _DIRECTLY EXPERIENCE_ WINE, LET'S FIND
OUT HOW YOU'RE GOING TO EXPERIENCE IT

KEY #2 - LEARN _HOW_ TO NOTICE WINE

Wine is a lot like life.  Without slowing down to “smell the
roses,” the enjoyable, subtle details of life will pass you by.
Without slowing down to notice wine, then all of its enjoyable,
subtle details will pass you by, too … and you'll never learn the
skills you need to develop the confidence and ease you want,
regardless of how much wine you consume.

There are TWO parts to learn how to notice wine: _MINDSET _and
_SKILL_.

1) MINDSET

There are two parts to setting the right mindset, in the following
order:

1. SUSPEND JUDGMENT

This is where the trap begins for most people, when they find
themselves having to "judge" a wine without ever learning how to do
it.

This happens when a person is forced to make a buying decision within
a short period of time: “Do I like this wine enough to spend my
money on it _now_?”

This occurs in two different situations:

While TASTING, at a winery, restaurant or wine bar
While SHOPPING, anyplace wine is sold retail

The time pressure of the situation doesn't help the average consumer
without any wine knowledge or wine tasting experience, because they
don't know:

HOW to "judge" a wine, aside from "I like it." (either taste or
bottle label)
WHAT to "judge" IN wine, aside from price.

If you want to know the biggest and most common obstacle people have
with wine, this is it:

MOST PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW HOW TO BUY A "GOOD" WINE WITHOUT FIRST
LEARNING _HOW_ TO "JUDGE" WHAT MAKES A WINE "GOOD."

It's like wanting to know how to pass your driving test without first
learning _how_ to drive a car_._

Ironically, here's the pitfall in the above obstacle:

_In order to learn anything new (especially wine), it's necessary to
suspend your judgments about what you're studying FIRST - otherwise,
your desire to be right about your judgments will block your capacity
to learn about what you're studying._

Isn't that hilarious?

2. DEVELOP CURIOSITY

Have you ever noticed how curious and full of wonder a two-year old
child is? Everything is exciting and new, and life is an adventure.

Guess what?  Wine is an adventure, too.  It’s the most unique
beverage in the world … every wine ever made was affected by annual
climate, soil, the winemaker, fermentation, oak barrels, time spent
aging in the bottle, and more.  There are so many variables that can
affect the juice in each glass you’ll ever drink.  That’s what
makes wine tasting such a fascinating journey.

By developing a sense of adventure and playful curiosity like a
two-year old, you’re well on your way to enjoying the journey, and
learning how to notice what’s in each glass.  The good news is that
curiosity is easy to develop, and only takes two simple questions.
Imagine being a playfully curious two-year old child asking the
following:

"WHAT'S THERE?"
"WHAT ELSE IS THERE?"

Can you imagine how much easier (and more fun) it could be to learn
wine by being playfully curious like a little kid, and asking those
two basic questions?

It _can_ be that simple.  Really.

2) SKILL

Once you establish an empowering mindset, you need to learn the
skill.

With wine, the skill we need to learn is commonly called “wine
tasting," which is the complete opposite of regular "wine drinking."
The skill of wine tasting can be taught in 10-15 minutes.

Just like any other skill, it needs to be applied through practice.
What a fun skill to practice!

The first key to noticing wine is to s-l-o-w down.  After
s-l-o-w-i-n-g down, the second key to noticing wine is to directly
experience it through 4 of your 5 senses:

* LOOK at the wine
* SMELL the wine
* TASTE the wine
* FEEL the wine

Once you directly experience wine with 4 of your 5 senses, you'll be
able to use your own words to describe what you’re noticing.
 Notice first, articulate second.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW _HOW_ TO NOTICE WINE, LET'S FIND OUT WHAT YOU'RE
GOING TO NOTICE AND ARTICULATE

KEY #3: LEARN _WHAT_ TO NOTICE _IN_ WINE

To learn any skill, there is a language to learn with it.  Think
about the skills you're good at and the interests you're passionate
about, and the specialized words you speak because of them.  Wine and
wine tasting is _exactly_ the same.

Once you learn _how_ to notice wine, you need to learn _WHAT_ to
notice _IN_ wine.  In order to do that, you need to learn the
language of _WHAT _you're noticing.

* Key #2 was about YOU learning the MINDSET & SKILL
* Key #3 is about WINE and learning the LANGUAGE

This is where you take the mindset & skill you developed in Key #2,
and begin to notice and articulate the qualities in wine that will
give you the knowledge you need:

* COLOR
* BODY
* STRUCTURE
* AROMAS
* FLAVORS

THIS IS WHERE MOST PEOPLE GIVE UP, YET IT'S NOT AS DIFFICULT AS IT
SOUNDS … IF THE INFORMATION IS PRESENTED IN A CLEAR, WELL-ORGANIZED
FASHION.

As you begin to notice and articulate the above elements in wine,
you'll start applying your knowledge and tasting experience to “wine
tasks” like:

* NAVIGATING around a wine shop
* READING a label – on the front _and_ back of the bottle
* BUYING wine at a store
* READING a wine list
* PAIRING food and wine
* ORDERING wine in a restaurant, wine bar or lounge
* RECOMMENDING wine to others

We do these "wine tasks" before or during those moments we meet with
people:

DINNER PARTIES, COCKTAIL PARTIES, HOLIDAY PARTIES, NETWORKING MIXERS

ENTERTAINING CLIENTS, BUSINESS LUNCHES \">REALLY WANT?

NOW THAT YOU KNOW _WHAT_ TO NOTICE _IN_ WINE, LET'S FIND OUT HOW
YOU'RE GOING TO ATTAIN THAT CONFIDENCE AND EASE

KEY #4 - ESTABLISH A _BASELINE_

Key #4 is a blind spot for virtually everyone - yet it's the _MOST_
important of all 4 KEYS.

Every skill you've ever learned in your life has a BASELINE - a
minimum or starting point used for comparisons.

Many skills require passing a test or receiving certification to
prove you've properly established your baseline - for example, having
to pass your driving test when you're trying to get your driver's
license for the first time.

A BASELINE in wine tasting is a basic standard that can serve as a
comparison or control for all future tastings, _developed through
experience applying the first 3 Keys_.

This is how you'll attain confidence and ease with wine.

Many wine drinkers, even seasoned ones who have consumed a lot of
wine for years or decades, have fallen into the pitfall of _never_
establishing a baseline.  Not because they did anything bad or wrong,
but because they were never _aware_ of it.

The only people on Earth that are _ever_ tested for their wine
tasting baseline are sommeliers, and many of them aren't even aware
that that's what's being judged and assessed during their blind
tasting exams.

_That's_ why most people (including you) aren't aware of it.

Not developing a baseline is the biggest blind spot and obstacle most
people face when learning about wine and wine tasting.  Luckily, it's
_not_ necessary to be tested like a sommelier to establish a wine
tasting baseline for yourself.

Having never learned and applied the first 3 Keys to establish a
baseline, once most people do find a few wines they like, they end up
drinking those same “safe” wines over and over again … which
becomes their standard of comparison and control for all future
tastings.

This behavior is driven by an _unconscious _FEAR:

* To protect oneself from "making another bad wine choice" ever
again
* To protect oneself from "being unable to find another wine they
like" ever again

WITHOUT DEVELOPING A BASELINE, MOST PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE CONFIDENCE
TO DISCOVER OR SELECT NEW WINES BECAUSE THERE’S NO CONTEXT AROUND
THE FEW WINES THEY DO DRINK OTHER THAN "_I LIKE IT._"

We talked about this in "SUSPEND JUDGMENT" from KEY #2.  We've come
full circle.

What does that look or sound like?  I live in Southern California,
and what I've heard most often over the years are phrases like:

* "I ALWAYS drink _Pinots_." (Pinots short for Pinot Noir) [grape]
* "I STICK TO_ buttery _Chardonnays." [style]
* "I ONLY drink _Napa _Cabs (Cabs short for Cabernet Sauvignon)."
[location]
* "I JUST drink '_Two Buck Chuck_ (Charles Shaw from Trader
Joe's).'" [brand/price]
* "I've been drinking _Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay for years_, and I
DON'T WANT TO CHANGE it." [brand/loyalty]

What if they taste a wine they don't recognize, or come across a wine
list where they don’t recognize anything familiar? What is their
capacity to enjoy wine (let alone lead others in a social situation)
in those moments?

You get the idea.  They're stuck in a rut.

I call it "The Wine Trap."

The saddest thing about "The Wine Trap" is that any childlike sense
of play, discovery, exploration, wonder and curiosity has died and
been traded for an illusion of _safety._

If being stuck in "The Wine Trap" sounds dull and boring, you're
right.

There's no need for _anybody _to be stuck in "The Wine Trap,"
including you.  Really.

_To learn about wine and wine tasting, you could do what most people
do you could spend countless hours aimlessly reading books, magazines
and blog post "tips" as well as tasting and drinking random wines and
getting nowhere._

_And, since you wouldn't be any closer to learning the _4 KEYS TO
ATTAIN CONFIDENCE AND EASE WITH WINE_, you would also be wasting your
time, effort and money._

AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, THE MOST TIME-EFFICIENT AND COST-EFFECTIVE WAY
TO DEVELOP A SOLID BASELINE IN _ANY_ SKILL IS TO BE GUIDED DOWN A
PRECISE PATH WITH A MENTOR.

YOU CAN OFTEN PRODUCE A RESULT IN WEEKS OR MONTHS _WITH_ A MENTOR
THAT WOULD TAKE YOU YEARS TO COMPLETE _ON YOUR __OWN_, IF YOU COMPLETE
IT AT ALL.

THE AMOUNT OF _TIME _AND _FRUSTRATION _YOU SAVE WITH A MENTOR EN
ROUTE TO PRODUCING THAT RESULT IS PRICELESS.
