_TEACHING CHILDREN TO READ_

YOU CAN TEACH READING AT HOME

"I am passionate about teaching children to read. Children that start
school already reading are confident and ready for further academic
learning, they have a head start on the road to academic success.

I would like you to be able to give your child the best opportunity
to succeed at school. I have written a step by step program that
clearly outlines how to teach reading skills to young children, so you
can teach your child to read at home.

Everything you need to successfully teach reading is in the book, no
need to purchase flash cards or to sit your child in front of a
television or computer. The learning activities outlined in my book
teach reading skills using play based activities and games that will
be fun for both you and your child.

By following the steps in my book you will be able to teach your
child to read at home and you will also foster a lifelong love of
learning".

There is debate in communities all over the world as to when to begin
to teach reading skills. Some people believe that early literacy
education may be harmful for children or that young children are not
developmentally ready to learn to read. There seems to be a general
concern that children are being 'pushed' into learning academic skills
too early and should have more opportunity for creative play
experiences.

You cannot 'push' a child to learn they must be ready to learn. As
educators, what we do is provide the stimulus and the opportunity for
learning to occur and the child will learn when they have the
developmental capacity to do so.

Children everywhere are learning to read early and increasing number
of parents are teaching their children to read successfully before
they commence school. The key is to teach reading skills in a fun way,
where children learn to read through play based guided activities.

Too many children find learning to read difficult and there are long
term consequences that result when children experience reading
difficulties. These include;

· lower self-confidence
· lack of motivation and
· reduced capacity for successful overall school performance.

Teaching children to read before they start school builds confidence
and provides children with the skills to develop in all academic
areas.

HOW PARENTS CAN TEACHING CHILDREN TO READ

The role of parents in children's education today is particularly
important. Learning to read is a process that begins very early in
childhood. Parents are providing the environment for pre language, pre
reading and pre writing skills to be learnt from the very beginning of
their child's life. Talking and interacting with their child, reading
regularly, singing and playing with their children are the key
activities parents are undertaking to build language skills and
promote the development of literacy skills.

Parents all over the world are playing a key role in the development
of their child's literacy skills. After all, they have the great
advantage of having fewer children in their family than teachers have
in classrooms and therefore are providing vital one-on-one guided
learning opportunities.

Children exposed to a home environment where pre reading and pre
writing skills are emphasized have highly developed emerging literacy
skills and are finding learning to read easier.

Reading and singing with their children are two of the most
significant things parents are doing to promote literacy success.
Reading a minimum of two stories and singing or saying three rhymes a
day is developing their child's emergent literacy skills.

Parents are reading and singing with enthusiasm and encouraging
their child to participate in the experience. By immersing their child
in stories and rhymes they are providing the opportunity for their
child to be exposed to the rhythm of language and at the same time are
promoting a love of literature.

Once children are familiar with the language in books and rhymes
parents are introducing fun learning to read activities to promote
specific skill development.

Having high expectations for their child's success is also a strong
predictor for academic success. Parents that provide the opportunities
for learning to occur and encourage success are finding that their
children are succeeding academically.
