So what exactly is a hedgehog?
Hedgehogs belong to the mammal family called the Erinaceinae. This is a family of shrew, like mammals, that can be found in Europe, New Zealand, Asia and Africa.
Hedgehogs are a nocturnal animal that live primarily on their own and are rarely seen in the wild with other hedgehogs, unless they are a nursing mother or are mating.
In the wild, hedgehogs live in burrows and primarily feed off of insects, making them an insectivore. While hedgehogs have been around for millions of years, the name “hedgehog” can be traced back to the mid 1400’s. The name is derived from Middle English and comes from the words “heyg”, which means “hedgerows and hoge”, which describes the pig-like snout that hedgehogs have.
Although hedgehogs do have quills, they are not related to the porcupine and their quills are actually quite different from those of the porcupine as they are softer and do not hurt you quite like a porcupine’s does.
Hedgehogs can be domesticated very quickly and make very friendly small animal companions.
Hedgehogs enjoy human company, and they will interact with the people who care for them.

The most common type of hedgehog found in pet stores is the African Pygmy Hedgehog.
The African Pygmy Hedgehog, which this book primarily focuses on, comes in many different colours, and is the domesticated variety of either the 4-Toed Hedgehog or the Algerian Hedgehog.
The African Pygmy Hedgehog, that weighs between 250 to 500 grams and 5 to 8 inches in length and are usually about the size of a small guinea pig.
They are characterized by their small raccoon-like faces. The African Pygmy hedgehog has a broad forehead and well-defined cheeks, and gives them a very cheerful appearance and has bright black eyes and a cute pointy nose.
There are several differences in colour with African Pygmy Hedgehogs and they range in color from: albino, apricot, cream, pale grey, light brown to dark brown, rust, dark grey, black and even a mottled or mixture of colors.
