Finally, there's a program available to help current and prospective missionaries
serve with all their heart, might, mind and strength!

Sadly, the average weight-gain for missionaries in some missions is nearly 50 pounds.  That’s right, 50 pounds!  Maybe you’ve heard of the “freshman 15,” but what about the “missionary 50?”  Similar statistics plague nearly every other mission located in developed nations.  On the other end of the spectrum, unhealthy weight-loss is a serious concern for missionaries serving in less-developed countries.  Neither condition is favorable.

Thousands of full-time missionaries return home early and countless more experience interruptions during their service because of health-related issues.  Health concerns in the mission field are expensive costing millions of dollars annually.  Consequently, the missionary, his or her companion, the missionary work and the Church suffer.

Missionaries give up 18 or 24-months of their life to serve the Lord and along the way sacrifice a great deal, sometimes even including their own health.  It’s unfortunate that so many missionaries return home to begin a promising life, out-of-shape, overweight or undernourished with poor health habits that haunt them for the rest of their lives.  It doesn’t have to be this way.

Hi, my name is Calvin Buhler and I’m the author of the best-selling book, Missionary Fitness: Prepare Your Body and Spirit for Service.  As a health and human performance expert I have coach thousands of people on the principles of health, fitness and nutrition.  I’ve authored many articles, spoken at seminars around the world and have been a guest on popular radio and television talk shows.  With multiple certifications and degrees, I’ve consulted Olympic and professional athletes, university sports teams and nutritional supplement companies.

Having served a two-year mission myself I know of the health and fitness troubles experienced by missionaries.  I not only witnessed but also experienced many of the challenges mentioned above.

For this reason, I’ve developed a never-before-seen system to help missionaries prepare their bodies and spirits for service and then to serve their missions with all their heart, might, mind and strength.

“I wish I had Missionary Fitness when I served my mission!”
Robert G. Allen | Best-Selling Author

“To call Missionary Fitness refreshing, different, and better is an understatement that shows my weakness for language. I believe that any person who prayerfully studies and uses the principles taught will transform their life both physically and spiritually. They will embody the physical representation of our spiritual potential and be a beacon of our Heavenly Fathers’ love to the world.”
Neil Anderson | Fitness Expert and Talk Show Host

The Problem

The idea for Missionary Fitness goes back to the time I was preparing for my mission.  I had just finished up a very successful collegiate athletic career and was in the best shape of my life.  As an athlete I was naturally concerned with my level of health and fitness.  In fact, from the time I was a young child when I first began participating in sports, exercise and nutrition had been a way of life for me.

As the time approached to send in the application to go on my mission, my priorities began shifting.  The focus of my life had changed from strengthening my physical body to strengthening my spirit.  Of course, all my life I had been indirectly preparing for my mission by doing all the necessary things young men are instructed to do to prepare for a mission.  I attended seminary and institute, church meetings, youth activities, firesides and studied the scriptures.  But the time had come to be more focused and committed to directly preparing for my mission.

I was fortunate because my brother had just returned home from his mission and we had made an agreement – he would help me prepare for my mission and I would help him readjust to regular life.  We did our best to live the missionary lifestyle while not actually being on a mission.  We would get up early and go to bed early, we prayed and studied together, we read from the Missionary Guide, studied the discussions and yes, we even role-played common missionary scenarios.

All of this preparation proved to be beneficial, but as I studied and prepared spiritually, I still felt like something was missing from the missionary lifestyle.  I quickly realized the physical preparation of a missionary was just as important as the spiritual preparation.

Missionaries are instruments in God’s hands, but are limited by physical bodies.  The spirit of a missionary may be willing but if the flesh is weak, then that missionary may not reach his or her full potential!

As an athlete and having had extensive education in exercise physiology and nutrition, I was naturally concerned about the lack of exercise and quality of nutrition a typical missionary experiences during his or her mission.

At the time the Missionary “White” Handbook instructed missionaries to “…schedule time to exercise regularly” (Missionary Handbook, p. 17).  However, on the previous page, the recommended daily schedule (Missionary Handbook, p. 16) outlines what a missionary should be doing every hour and half hour of the day with no mention of exercise.  How was a missionary expected to “schedule time to exercise regularly” when there was no time allotted for it?  Fortunately, the recommended daily schedule for missionaries has changed and now allocates 30 minutes each morning (except Sunday, of course) to exercise.

Health and fitness had become a way of life for me and I was willing to sacrifice it if necessary, to serve the Lord.  However, I knew there had to be a way to incorporate health and fitness into the missionary lifestyle because a healthy missionary is a better instrument in the Lord’s hands.  This would require a regular exercise program and a good nutritional plan.

So my search began for an exercise and nutrition program designed specifically for missionaries and their unique circumstances.  I read every missionary preparation book, every talk by former and current Prophets and General Authorities, every church manual and any other related resources that I could find.  When my exhaustive research was complete, I was sadly disappointed.  I had found nothing with any real substance.  Sure, the subject of health and nutrition for missionaries was addressed but to a very small degree.  The limited amount of information that did exist merely mentioned the importance of exercise and nutrition, but failed to explain how to integrate it into missionary life.

Unfortunately, no single resource with this important information existed for missionaries as they prepare for and serve their mission.  I sensed a real need for such a resource.

At that moment, I made the decision to create the resource explaining, in detail, how a missionary could incorporate health, fitness and nutrition into their daily schedule so they could serve to their fullest potential.

The Solution

The inspiration for such a resource was reinforced many times over while on my mission and many times in the years since returning home.  I saw first-hand how small lifestyle changes could dramatically improve a missionary’s ability to serve.  After implementing the strategies and principles I developed, missionaries everywhere have radically changed their missions and their lives.
