some from my closet, only to find a few pairs of pants or loose shirts
which fit me at that time. Whenever I stare at myself in the mirror,
man I don’t know myself anymore. I told myself that this isn’t me.
This isn’t the Sonia that men once admired. This isn’t me that
used to climb mountain with my friends on weekends. How could I do
that if I couldn’t even lift my feet to walk for long hours? What
more if I had to climb a mountain that would only make me so tired.
Well, this was my problem. Obesity was my problem.

I had realized that it doesn’t only made me look bulgy or fat, but
it also made my life miserable. I told myself that I wanted to end
this life chapter once and for all. I told myself that I wanted to go
back to the real me. The “me” that looked so attractive and
lovely, and the “me” that was very healthy.

Here are the top reasons people don’t exercise:

REASON #1

People don’t care (Apathy). Many people choose watching TV instead
of engaging in a physical activity like gardening, walking, or jogging
in place.  I would never dare care for exercising and dieting ten
years ago. I thought that exercising is only for people with leisure
time, and I didn’t have that. So, why would I care in the first
place?

REASON #2

People lack knowledge on health benefits of working out, or shall we
say exercise is not their priority. It’s low priority in their
lives. Ten years ago, I thought exercise was such a waste of time. It
was such a waste of my effort. I would rather choose to work all day
and all night and not to exercise at all. OMG! I was wrong all along.

REASON #3

People feel social discomfort. When I was obese, I never wanted to
work out in the gym because these people looked at me like I’m a
clown or an obese villain from a Marvel comic story. No matter how
hard I pressed on my headset or distract my attention out of them, I
could still envision them talking about me. It was like I was
hallucinating that I could hear their voices telling me, “Hey fat
lady. Have you had your burger today?” That sucks!

REASON #4

People feel bored when they workout due to lack of variety. Weight
lifting daily, I felt a surge of boredom rushing through my veins. I
could remember my fitness trainer yelling at me saying, “Sonia, keep
going!” I didn’t pay attention at all, so I fired her the next
day. I really got bored of her telling me what to do all the time.
Actually, part of it was that I didn’t like my trainer’s style.
When I started at home exercises and diet, I didn’t have to deal
with anyone but deal with myself.

REASON #5

People don’t want to sweat out to travel to and from the gym. When
I fired my personal trainer, I went to the gym, spending about thirty
minutes walking or ten minutes driving (one way). I figured out “Hey
I was wasting my time.” I felt such a jerk when I did that for
almost one month, thinking I could really burn some fats. I toiled day
and night, whenever I could, I worked out. But, dang! It wasn’t
worth it at all. One more thing, working out in the gym was really a
mess. I even had to call off my session when the weather was bad. So,
I realized that I was wasting not only my time but my money. Imagine,
during winter, I only get to workout a few times per month, thinking I
had to pay the same membership fee whether I used it or not. Oh my
God!

REASON #6

People don’t want to invest in costly gym clothes and membership. I
told you awhile back that I used to spend for my gym fee each month,
and that costs me more than a hundred bucks because of that “first
class gym,” as they say. When I was working out in the gym, I also
spent about $500 dollars for my gym clothes although those weren’t
really that “precious” in quality.

REASON #7

People feel discouraged. I was an outcast in that gym especially that
I kept working out a secret to my family and friends, so who would I
take along with me working out? Hey, I didn’t want to hire another
personal trainer. Not again. After three months, I finally gave up.
Thanks to the homemade salami my mother made me on Thanksgiving. I
told myself to stop and wake up from this nightmare. Finally, I
stopped working out.

These are some reasons why you and why me don’t want to work out.
Stopping, I thought would solve my problem, but the problem just got
bigger and meaner. (I gained 20 pounds more.) But wait, I forgot to

People simply don’t have time to exercise. When I cancelled my gym
membership, I realized that “yes” I don’t have time for working
out. At some point, I felt relieved because all I did for almost three
months was to sleep and to work and to eat (The cycle went on!)
