PROBLEM 1: Not Using Your Entire Body

Most guys fail to ever reach their true potential on the Bench Press because they don’t set up properly. They only involve the upper body muscles, instead of using their entire body in the lift. I’m not talking about cheating and popping your ass off the bench to get the weight up either. I’m mean actually learning how to incorporate the strength of your entire body (while maintaining perfect form) to lift more weight.

The Bench Press is a full-body exercise. When you start using all of your muscles at the same time you instantly lift more weight.


PROBLEM 2: Not Building a Foundation

Can you imagine trying to build a big house without first laying the foundation? The house would crumble…

Well, the same is true for building a big Bench Press. You MUST build a foundation of strength before attempting heavy weight. If you don’t build a base and simply try to pack weight on the the bar week after week, you quickly reach a sticking point. Gains of strength then become more difficult. Eventually you’ll get injured too.

Most guys never learn how to build a foundation of strength for the Bench Press. This is one of the BIGGEST reasons why they fail to ever achieve a respectable Bench Press.

The key is to perform multiple, low-rep sets with short rest periods. These help build muscular and tendon strength without setting you up for injury.


PROBLEM 3: Not Training On An Effective Schedule

As I said before, Monday’s are the BIG day for guys to Bench Press. Everybody wants to start the week doing the Bench Press. They usually just do the Bench Press one time per week… BIG PROBLEM!

I found out a long time ago that when you Bench Press once every seven days it is harder to get stronger!

Guys tend to set up their training programs on a 7-day schedule. But the Bench Press muscles don’t work best for strength gains when trained this way.

Most guys will find that their Bench Press will increase BIG TIME by training the lift every 4-5 days instead.


PROBLEM 4: Not Using The Right Exercises

There’s a growing trend towards guys using fancy exercises, and special equipment to train the Bench Press. There’s nothing wrong with that… if you’re naturally strong in the Bench Press! But, if you struggle to gain strength on the Bench Press you won’t make good progress by trying to follow the training programs of elite powerlifters. They are naturals for the lift and almost anything they do seems to work.

The other problem is too much pressing and not enough pulling…

Guys who struggle to build a big bench press usually do too much assistance work in the form of pressing. They also neglect doing enough assistance work for the back muscles (which are crucial to building a big bench press).


PROBLEM 5: Not Eating Correctly

Believe it or not but how you eat is HUGE when it comes to building a bigger Bench Press. The Bench Press is a “leverage lift.” That means when you’re a couple of pounds heavier, your Bench Press goes up.

The first problem with Bench Press nutrition is when guys just try to eat everything in sight. Your muscles need consistent feedings of good food in order to be efficient. Just loading up on empty calories will do little to boost your Bench Press gains.

The second problem is over-reliance on Protein drinks. Yes, protein drinks are awesome. But when you ingest too much protein you tend to under-eat carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are necessary for increasing your Bench Press because they not only give you energy for your workouts, but they load the muscle cells for that extra couple of pounds of “leverage” you need to lift more weight.

The third problem with Bench Press nutrition is not eating enough “good fats.” You never want to follow a low-fat diet if you want to increase your bench press and muscle mass. Good fats stimulate a hormonal response that you need… especially if you’re “drug free.”
