WHY JULIA DECIDED TO LEARN TO SPEAK PORTUGUESE...
Like most people who decide to try a new language Julia had a GREAT
REASON for starting.
When she was a little girl Julia spent many FUN-FILLED DAYS staying
with her Grandparents, Luiz and Anna, out on their farm. Those were
happy carefree days filled with all sorts of outdoor fun by day, and
nights round the fire listening to her Papa tell stories of HIS
CHILDHOOD IN BRAZIL.
When he spoke of those days her Papa's eyes misted over and
FANTASTIC, EXCITING SOUNDING WORDS OF PORTUGUESE slipped into his
speech as he recalled the fun and the hardship in equal measure...
Her Papa left BRAZIL when he was little more than a boy, looking to
FIND HIS FORTUNE IN AMERICA. He found work laboring on the railroad.
Long hard hours of back-breaking work day after day allowed Luiz to
save enough to buy a small holding, a FOOTHOLD IN THE LAND HE'D COME
TO LOVE. More hard work allowed him to grow his small holding into a
working farm, and allowed him to marry Anna, the daughter of a
neighboring farmer.
In order to fit in and craft a normal life for themselves in America
Luiz and Anna decided to bring their children up with English as their
only language. Sure Luiz spoke in the old tongue occasionally, but the
longer he was in America the less often he spoke Portuguese, and by
the time Julia, his granddaughter, came along, PORTUGUESE HAD ALL BUT
DIED OUT IN HER FAMILY.
Until one day Julia was digging through a box of odds and ends in her
attic and she came across a bunch of documents that used to belong to
her Papa. This TREASURE TROVE OF HISTORY sparked something in Julia; a
desire TO RECONNECT with her heritage, a desire to VISIT THE HOME OF
HER PAPA, and a desire to LEARN PORTUGUESE.

WHAT JULIA DID FIRST...
Now Julia is a smart woman who did well at school, so SCHOOL SEEMED
LIKE THE LOGICAL PLACE to go to get the learning she wanted. So Julia
signed up for a PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE CLASS down at the local
high-school. It started off really well. She went to class, listened
to the teacher, repeated words with the rest of the class, filled in
her work-book, and went home.
Then she did it again, and it was OK.
Then she did it again, and it was a BIT BORING.
Then her daughter was sick, and Dan was away on business, so she
didn’t go that week.
The following week she went again, but everyone else was ahead of her
and she didn’t know what they were doing. THE TEACHER JUST DIDN’T
HAVE TIME TO GIVE HER THE ATTENTION SHE NEEDED TO CATCH UP.
Then the same thing happened again, and she ENDED UP EVEN FURTHER
BEHIND.
Then she had her father’s 70th birthday dinner so she MISSED CLASS
AGAIN.
By this point she knew that SHE’D NEVER CATCH UP WITH THE REST OF
THE CLASS, and that she had no CHANCE OF GETTING THE EXTRA ATTENTION
from the teacher to help her out... SO SHE NEVER WENT BACK.
So that’s hours of work and plenty of money DOWN THE TUBES.

WHAT JULIA DID NEXT...
Julia still wanted to learn Portuguese, to honor her Papa and her
heritage. So she hit the internet to find a FREE COURSE ONLINE.
Understandably Julia was reluctant to part with her hard earned cash

out came a whole bunch of different courses, tutorials, and schemes.

And the first day she enjoyed sitting at her computer learning, and

And the next day she still liked it and learned even more, although

BORED WITH THE LACK OF VARIATION, and a little bit sick of all the
grammar rules when all she wanted was to be CONFIDENT speaking
Portuguese, and she was beginning to suspect that her course was A
LITTLE ONE DIMENSIONAL, A LITTLE SHALLOW.
Then the following week she got a chance to use her new Portuguese
skills and was mortified when she was told that the things she was
saying were technically correct, but HER PRONUNCIATION WAS APPALLING
and that really she sounded VERY OLD-FASHIONED and actually not at all
the way modern Portuguese speakers sound.
So back to the internet she went.
Now, you have to ADMIRE JULIA’S TENACITY, her desire to find a way

She could even add her own notes as she progressed through the lesson
using the MY NOTES tab. She just entered the info she wanted to
remember, clicked ‘submit notes’, and it was AVAILABLE WHENEVER
SHE NEEDED IT.
Julia quickly found that these fantastic lessons really were a great
way to MANAGE HER LEARNING and to get her PORTUGUESE ROCKETING AHEAD!
All of a sudden THINGS WERE LOOKING A LOT BRIGHTER FOR JULIA’S

She also found a MY LEVEL tab, just like in the IAC Lessons, so she
could rate how well she knew the content and DECIDE WHEN SHE WAS READY
TO MOVE ON.
With all this GREAT LEARNING CONTENT Julia was sure that Rocket
