WHAT IS SHOPIFY AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Shopify is a web-based system that helps you set up and run a sexy
online shop without doing any programming. I've tried several
eCommerce 'platforms', and I really believe that Shopify is the best
available. Here's an assessment of several of the major platforms:
* WORDPRESS E-COMMERCE is somewhat popular because it can integrate
into existing sites on the widespread WordPress system, but it can be
very complex to set up and fiddly to use. It adds extra pages into
your site without asking, and takes a long time to customise for a
basic store with 1-10 products. I've used it in the past, but have
stopped because I find it overly complex, especially for smaller
websites.
* You might consider using MAGENTO if you were an experienced web
designer with programming skills. It's possible to make great-looking
stores, but it isn't very easy for non-techies to configure. Most
people will need a developer to set up and maintain the store,
increasing the cost and barrier to entry.
* OS COMMERCE is an older platform which has been around for a long
time. Due to its age, the stores created with it tend to look... old.
Other platforms offer more customisation, and better looking
storefronts.
* I LIKE SHOPIFY: it has great looking themes, many of which are
free, with some paid upgrades for when your store is more advanced.
You won't need to write any code to get your store set up. Payments
are set up within 5 minutes, and configuring everything else is a
cinch. Their support is also far better than any of the other
platforms in my experience, and they currently support over 15,000
businesses.
