And because I was so unhappy with my weight, I would hide underneath baggy clothes and refuse to get out and about because I was scared people would laugh at me...

The worst thing was that it had severely affected my confidence – I couldn’t even talk to girls or ask them out on a date because I didn’t think I was worthy of being with anyone nice...

I’d tell myself that no-one would be interested in the ‘fat guy’ – heck, I wouldn’t even have my photo taken as I was so ashamed about my size...

In fact, this is what I used to look like just a few months ago:



When I looked through my photo album, I couldn’t find any decent pictures of myself at my heaviest because I refused to have them taken!

I would literally hide behind others whenever a camera was around (as you can tell from my before shot)

The penny finally dropped one day when late for work one morning, I tried to ‘run’ up the stairs because I missed the elevator...

...now you’ve got to remember that I wasn’t used to taking the stairs – especially when my office was on the third floor!

I struggled to get upstairs and when I finally made it, I was one big, sweaty mess and about ready to keel over from the effort.

My breathing was out of control and I went all light-headed. I had to sit down for ten minutes to catch my breath...

...When one of my colleagues asked me if I was ok, I nodded and tried to brush it to one side – but it was what she said to me that stunned me and really forced me to change myself...

Seeing that I was really struggling, she politely said to me:



I felt humiliated.

Even though I know she meant well and said it totally out of kindness, I knew deep down that my weight was preventing me from not just flying up the stairs, but from soaring in every other aspect of my life too...

You see, I’d gotten comfortable with being big and didn’t actually realize how many other areas of my life were being beaten because of my weight...

I didn’t socialize as much as I’d like to, I didn’t play sports or get out much for simple things like shopping (because I knew I would have a hard time finding things that fit me properly and look good)...

I even passed by a promotion because I was worried about being called a ‘fat manager’!

I couldn’t believe how much of my life had been put on hold because of my weight...

I lost out on girls I liked because my weight made me too self-conscious and shy to muster up the courage to speak to them...

In short, I was living my life like a shadow of what I should have been – and all that because I was overweight.

That night, I couldn’t sleep – I tossed and turned thinking about the comment my colleague had made - ‘you know, maybe if you lost some weight and started working out a little more, you’d be flying up those stairs rather than getting beat by them.’
