What do you think of when you hear the word Muse? Perhaps you think of a Muse from Ancient Greece, a mythical being who inspired the creation of music and stories. Or, you may remember that the word muse refers to thinking or contemplating. The aim of MyStudy Muse is to inspire a creative and thoughtful approach to study.
Of course, effective study involves more than simply thinking about study, it involves focused awareness and targeted action. This is what the student will learn over the 4 weeks; how to study in a focused and efficient manner.
For the student:
Week 1 – We encourage you to increase your understanding of yourself as a learner. We also discuss the setting of learning targets.
Week 2 – You explore different learning styles and learn how to increase your learning flexibility.
Week 3 – Your learning confidence will grow as you discover memory boosting techniques.
Week 4 – You will embark upon a creative journey that will show you how to be the author of your study experience. This is the time to commit to the mindset of a successful learner.
Each weekday, over a four week time period (20 times in total), you will receive an Mp3 Audio Musing link via email. Listen to MyStudy Muse while seated at your desk or in a dedicated study area. We suggest setting aside a specific time each day to complete your MyStudy Muse experience. Although the sessions vary in length from 40 minutes (in the first week) to 80 minutes for the fourth week, each session commences with learning theory and then moves into a Guided Musing.
That’s over 21 hours of study techniques, musings and learning methods… all in one great package!
The Guided Musing is a relaxation exercise which encourages your brain to focus on the learning which is about to take place. It is like a mental warm up; the Guided Musing informs your brain that it is time to settle within a study mindset. After the Guided Musing you listen to targeted study music. We call this a Musing Session. While you listen to the music, you study. You may choose to complete homework or begin exam preparation. This Musing Session is designed to help you focus, concentrate and retain information; the music we provide has been carefully selected to compliment your learning. Research has shown that listening to instrumental music, at a particular tempo, may encourage the brain to enter a learning pattern. However, at a more basic level, we are encouraging you to evoke learning rituals. What you will find is that whenever you hear this music, your brain automatically slips into a learning frame.
Initially your Musing Session continues for 30 minutes. Each week this study time increases by 10 minutes so that, by week 4 you will embark on focused study for 60 minutes. We have structured MyStudy Muse in this way to allow you time to build your mental fitness – like an athlete building endurance or a dancer building flexibility. Finally, at the end of the Musing Session you will be guided through a brief reflection. This is the time to think about the effectiveness of your Musing Session and look ahead to the next MyStudy Muse Guided Learning Session. As a result, each day, as you complete the course, you will notice improvements in your study skills. In other words, you may become a self-motivated student who chooses to learn.
