I used to be the same way. I have lots of things I like to talk about and things I like to do but I couldn’t see a way of making any money out of them.
But it seems that you can make money online from just about anything. I say ‘just about’ because there might be something that you can’t make money from, but if there is, I haven’t come across it. And please don’t try and create an online business around something illegal or offensive.
As long as you have something that you like to do or a subject that you know a lot about or even just something that interests you, you can build an online business around it.
All you have to do to begin, is to build a website about it.
For instance, I was once pondering this exact fact about is it possible to make money from anything online, even if it’s just a hobby?
So I thought about things I like to do and whether I could build a profitable business from them, and I tried to think about the least interesting thing I like to do, and by least interesting I mean it wouldn’t be very interesting to many other people.
And I thought about knitting. I’ve been a knitter for most of my life. I still own my first pair of plastic pink knitting needles from when I was 7 years old and my Dad first taught me to knit and I set about knitting the shortest (I only had one ball of wool) and holiest (I kept dropping stitches) scarf the world has ever seen. But boy was I proud of it.
So would it be possible to make money online from knitting?
I googled knitting and found that there were thousands of different websites all devoted to the subject of knitting. Some were information sites selling knitting books and patterns, and some were information sites with instructions for beginners. There were websites selling knitting supplies from balls of wool to huge knitting machines, and others were websites where people were selling handmade items they’d knitted. I even found a websites where you can commission someone to knit items for you.
It seems that the craft of knitting is flourishing online and doing very well. There are even websites devoted to selling knitted items from people from all over the world, a kind of eBay for knitters. I had no idea that knitting was so popular. I thought it was all about me, sitting at home watching movies and doing my knitting. But apparently it’s not. It’s a whole online world of buying selling and making money.
So if I wanted to make a website all about knitting, I could sell what I knit, sell a certain kind of knitted product (jumpers, toys, tea cozies, wash cloths, etc), sell knitting related products, sell advertising space for other knitters/knitting companies, sell my services as a professional knitter, write about knitting, sell knitting patterns or just blog about my knitting. I could also do all these things.
There may be other ways to make money from knitting but I don’t know of any off hand. But even with just what I already discovered, it seems there are many ways to make money from a knitting website. In fact looking at the list above, it looks as if a knitting website could be huge. It could end up as hundreds of pages.
And don’t worry about how you’d sell knitting related products or sell advertising. It can all be done automatically without you having to store or ship anything. We’ll discuss that later too.
All you have to do right now is think about what it is that you’d like to set up a website about. You don’t have to think of how you’re going to make money. You just have to choose your subject (niche). And your niche can be narrow. It doesn’t have to be broad.
For example. You could set up a website about birds or you could narrow it to wild birds, or pet birds or parrots or even just budgerigars. The beauty of working online means your niche can be as broad or as narrow as you want.
You also need to think about what you want to say about your chosen subject. For instance, say you want to set up a website based on your religion. Are you going to be talking about religion in general? A belief in God? Are you going to try and recruit more members? Are you going to narrow it down to just the church where you pray? Are you going to talk about how it affects your life? Or are you going to sell religious products?
As another example, I have a website about writing at http://writeaholics.net. At first it was a website where I sold my services as a freelance writer. But I no longer do much freelance writing so now it’s a website devoted to teaching others how to become successful freelance writers. So although the niche of this website has stayed the same, the information it contains has changed completely.
I began my online business small with just one website and now I have 11 sites and I STILL only work part-time (18 hours a week). And because I love what I do it never feels like work.
People never believe that I can make money the way I do, so they never try it.
My neighbors think I don’t work at all - and they wouldn’t be far wrong.
My laptop lifestyle also means I can choose when I work. I start early every day and finish early because that suits my creative mind best.
Others choose to work in the evenings so that they can keep every day free to do what they want.
In the past I’ve read tons of ebooks about how to work from home. But most of them are either too technical for a newbie such as I was, or they talk about how to start up a huge online business that takes up far too much time and far too much money.
If you're looking for a "Get Rich Quick" scheme then this ebook isn't for you.
