Donna Brown, a Creole/African American, is a thirty-something Chicago
native and an ambitious local news anchor new to Dallas. Coming from a
broken home, she craves approval and acceptance from men. Even though
her Bible-quoting grandmother raised her with spiritual values, Donna
virtually ignores all that she is taught because she is on a quest to
find love. On her journey she encounters several obstacles, including
an Internet stalker and a fiancé with a wandering eye. Aside from her
rollercoaster love life, she is faced with additional challenges. Her
wayward younger sister claims to be “born again” after years of
substance abuse and leaves Chicago with her son to move in with Donna.
Donna faces physical and emotional challenges: Besides having to keep
her weight down for the camera, Donna oftentimes wonders whether the
man on her birth certificate is really her father. At age ten Donna
witnessed a vicious fight between her parents. “Not mine,” were
the last two words Donna heard him shout as he pointed a finger at
her. Not knowing whether he is right or wrong lingers in the back of
her mind until she stumbles upon the truth and experiences her
“aha” moment.
