* Prepare For Anything

Hello,

If children bring out your maternal instincts, being a grandmother
is an altogether a different experience and I have seven lovely
grandchildren and I can't even imagine life without them. I sure will
not bear to stand it if something were to happen to them because I was
not prepared enough. When you get to be my age you will have seen for
yourself what natural disasters can do to our lives. BUT WHAT IF YOU
DON"T SURVIVE THE NATURAL DISASTER BECAUSE YOU DID NOT KNOW HOW TO
REACT.

"That sucks!"

But just because I talk about natural disasters, please don't take
me as one of those "DOOMSDAY IS HERE!" spewing old ladies or an Al
Gore or Ted Turner hack that believes the world is going to end in 10
years if we continue to fossil fuel powered drive cars! Hogwash.

FAR FROM PREDICTING DOOMSDAY AND ALL THE DISASTERS THAT WILL BEFALL
US AT CERTAIN TIMES AND IN CERTAIN AREAS, I would like to talk about
HOW TO SURVIVE SUCH A DISASTER IF IT WERE TO EVER HAPPEN TO US. Young
people who are under the age of 40 will never understand the threat of
the cold war simply because it is not there anymore. People don't even
mention it! But I distinctly remember those days and the precautions
we always took in an eventuality of the cold war turning into a
reality - an ICBM exchange with the Russians.

But that is not the only _survival skills I learned_. Long before
that, even during my teenage years my family and I were avid campers
and we went on many camping expeditions which taught everyone the
basic skills of survival. These days kids like to _WATCH_ rather than
learning it themselves (THIS IS A PARENTING ISSUE AS WELL). I have
seen those programs on various TV channels that show how to survive in
the wild. But just watching programs is not going to teach you
anything better than waiting for water to boil by _looking_ at it.

BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY EVERYONE NEEDS TO LEARN SURVIVAL SKILLS AND
KNOW WHAT TO DO DURING AN EMERGENCY.

Again not to scare you, but life is quite unpredictable and you
don't know when the tropical storm will turn into a full fledged
hurricane. SO WHAT WILL YOU DO DURING THOSE TIMES? Are you going to
sit and wait until the government wakes up to your predicament and
sends aid (HOW DID THAT WORK OUT TO THE SURVIVORS OF HURRICANE KATRINA
- REMEMBER FEMA! WAL-MART BEAT THEM TO IT!)? OR ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE
THINGS INTO YOUR HANDS?

I would go for the second option anytime. Having control beats
depending on a nameless bureaucrat anytime. Since I have already seen
a natural disaster or two with my own eyes - I am from tornado alley
so I actually KNOW what I am talking about. Camping, hiking, and white
water sports have all been part of my teenage and young adult years.
So I do know extensively about first aid, danger, and survival.

In fact, during those times, the Cold War, we had one of those real
fallout shelters and people were trained how to man those community
shelters. I personally knew friends who went through those training
sessions and I was able to learn from them first hand. _Carrying a
small first-aid kit was secondary nature and most of us had one with
us all the time - certainly one in our car._

Without sounding like a heroic survivor I want you to know my job
takes me to places, and disasters have _GLANCED_ over my shoulders
while I passed through them. But the people who actually lived through
those devastations were quite helpless and that is what I would like
to change.

We should be prepared when disaster strikes.

I HAVE SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES WHAT HURRICANES CAN DO TO NORMAL
PEOPLE'S LIVES. It is not a sight worth watching when _people's homes
collapse like match sticks and get swept away in the downpour_. I once
drove through a forest fire while it raged and destroyed natural
habitats and human habitats alike. People survived this natural
phenomenon, or man-made, by moving away before the fire started, but
they did not have homes to move back into once the fire was contained.

Solar storms and blizzards always wreak havoc with the grids every
other year; DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY
FOR DAYS ON END? COULD YOU LIVE THROUGH THE WINTER WITHOUT
ELECTRICITY? DO YOU KNOW HOW TO? This is not to scare you. Or make you
think the end-of-world is upon us but just for you to start learning
the basics of survival in hard times.

Like I said before, young people in their twenties and thirties
don't even recall _hard_ days or times because they have never had to
face considerable hardship. But I have seen a few natural disasters
like the earthquake that SHOOK SAN FRANCISCO IN 1989 and I have been
through man-made disasters as well - the RODNEY KING RIOTS IN LA IN
THE 1990'S. They changed scores of people's lives forever. But just
because I was not personally affected does not mean I DON'T know what
it is like to go through them. Sadly I would have fared better under
the circumstances than the people who blundered through them. That is
the difference of knowing how to survive any eventuality.

You should know what to do if you are
"Stranded" in the middle of nowhere.

What if your car broke down in the middle of a storm?
Will you wait for the police or rescuers to come to your aid?

Or will you take steps to hold on your own and increase your chances
of completely pulling through? PLEASE DO NOT LIVE IN THE ASSUMPTION
THAT THESE THINGS HAPPEN ONLY TO _OTHER_ PEOPLE. It may be happening
to others today but tomorrow it may happen to you. You do not want to
be caught flat footed or unprepared.

So, are you going to end up as a hapless victim or are you going to
be more proactive and take steps to ensure you know how to tide things
over in case of a severe snowstorm, flood, or any other disaster that
can afflict humankind? It is not something that you need to take time
out to learn and practice all the time.

Just "knowing and learning" a few basic
survival skills should help you survive until actual help arrives or
when the situation clears by itself...

NATURAL DISASTERS ARE NOT SPECIFIC TO ANY REGION OR PLACE, it does
not matter which part of the world you live, nobody can predict when
nature's fury will be unleashed on us but if you are prepared you can
at least survive such disasters with your dignity and emotions intact.

What if we were to loose a loved one or even helpless little children
because we did not take the necessary steps to guide them and us? WILL
YOU BE ABLE TO SURVIVE THAT DISASTER? Nobody on this earth can; nobody
who has a conscious at least. It is the biggest disaster of all, to
lose a child because we were not prepared well enough.

Being prepared and warned is the key to survival but that does not
mean you walk around expecting lightning to strike you any minute!
There is no need to take such a pessimistic attitude in life; paranoia
is actually an unwanted and unhealthy psychosis. Life is all about
living but living with preparedness will only help us in any
eventuality.

My parents were really from the old-school of thought and were tough
mentally and physically and they inculcated the same values in me from
a young age. I HAD SEEN AND WATCHED THEM SURVIVE TOUGH TIMES WITHOUT
FLINCHING AND THE KEY WAS BEING PREPARED AT ALL TIMES. Or like my
father would say "_constant vigilance_." This is not paranoia but just
simply always having a backup plan and knowing how to take care of
oneself, and those around you, in case disaster chooses to strike.

LEARNING TO BE PREPARED DOES NOT MEAN YOU NEED TO HORDE PLENTY OF
CASH UNDER THE FLOORBOARDS.

It is not going to help when real disaster enters your life. Being
prepared means what you would do even if there is NO cash stashed
away. HOW YOU WILL RATION YOUR SUPPLIES AND YOUR INNER TOUGHNESS TO
OVERCOME THE PRESENT CHALLENGES?

LEARNING DISASTER-SURVIVAL IN FACT SHOULD BE A PRIORITY THAT EVERYONE
IN THE FAMILY SHOULD LEARN ABOUT. Don't take the attitude that kids
are too young and they will eventually learn later. It is never too
late to start teaching and believe me, children are innately tough and
can sense danger better than adults.I am not saying storms,
hurricanes, floods, blizzards, and tsunamis are all going to come
collide with us at any moment.

But what if even ONE of them were to
strike nearer your home?

WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SURVIVE THE AFTER EFFECT? Or will you just wait
and watch helplessly, hoping some government lackey hears your shouts
for help.

Waiting and watching can be really frustrating and believe me when I
say that. NOT that I have watched helplessly anytime disaster struck
because thanks to my parents and some of my friends I always knew what
to do. But I have seen helpless people let the disaster literally wash
over them. It is not their fault. THEY WERE NEVER TOLD OR TAUGHT
OTHERWISE. THEY NEVER LEARNED THEY CAN TAKE PROACTIVE STEPS TO NOT
ONLY HELP THEMSELVES BUT CAN ACTUALLY HELP OTHERS TOO. In a way
though, it is their fault a little.

The ideas I am proclaiming here are not original; some people choose
to not take their life into their own hands. Because being prepared
does not mean just you surviving the disaster, but you can help as
many people as you can. THERE ARE ALWAYS KIDS AND PETS THAT WILL NEED
YOUR HELP AND EVEN PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK OR WHO CANNOT MOVE OUT BY
THEMSELVES. You may have to leave one behind when time and survival
are on the brink; is this something you are capable of doing?
Furthermore, you not only are able to save your family and loved ones
but you can be of great help to the community at large or the people
around you.
