HERMIT CRAB HABITATS (CRABITATS)
As mentioned, hermit crabs cannot survive in small plastic
containers. In fact, hermit crabs will only live for a few weeks to
months if they are kept on a plastic container.
If you really want to properly care for your hermit crab, you need to
set up a proper hermit crab habitat or crabitat.
In a nutshell, this will be a glass terrarium with more than 1 hermit
crab with plenty of fresh fruits, water, proper substrate and even
real plants. Hermit crabs are very social creatures who do not like
to live in isolation.
.
THE HERMIT CRAB DIET
Although you may be tempted to feed your hermit crab little pellets
of "hermit crab food" from the pet store, be warned.
These little pellets of "food" will make your hermit crab nothing but
sick. Ingredients in hermit crab pet store "food" have been banned in
both dog and cat food and has very little nutritional value.
Hermit crabs are omnivores, meaning they need to eat both meat and
vegetables, and require a wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals that
they should be getting from fresh fruits, vegetables and meat, poultry
or seafood.
.
THE LIFE SPAN OF A HERMIT CRAB
A hermit crab, if properly taken care of, can live anywhere from
20-80 years or more.
This is a big difference from pet store hermit crabs that are only
able to live a few weeks to a few months at most.
As a pet owner, you want to do whatever you can to extend the life of
your hermit crab. This includes feeding your hermit crab real food and
keeping your hermit crab in an environment that is similar to his or
hers in the wild.
