Aquaponics is the combination of Aqua-culture, (raising aquatic animals such as fish), and Hydro-ponics, (growing plants without soil).
The advantages of hydroponic gardening have been well documented.
No soil is needed so there's no plowing or fertilizing. The water stays in the system and is recyled so it uses 80% less water than farming. Minerals and nutrients are under controlled release and never wasted. Plants grow faster with high yields between. Pests and diseases are easier to control.
The disadvantage of hydroponics is that you have to buy "plant food" or nutrients and supplements which are expensive.
Aquaculture also has its benefits in that it allows you to farm fish but the downside is all the fish waste must be filtered out to keep the fish healthy and that can also be expensive.
Aquaponics takes away the disadvantages of hydroponics and aquaculture by combining the two into one method.
Fish waste is recycled into nitrates which feeds the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish. When the plants are well watered and well fed using this method, they will often grow twice as fast as those grown in soil. And because we're not using soil, the roots don't need to dig very deep to find water and plants can be grown close together using much less space.
Formal scientific interest in the combining of aquaculture and hydroponics started in the mid-1970s with numerous research papers being published. Since then aquaponics systems and techniques have been streamlined and perfected to the point that anyone can use aquaponics at home to grow their own vegetables, fruits and fish just by following our easy, do-it-yourself aquaponics method.

"How Much Money Can I Save?"
When I was first looking into aquaponics, I scoured the internet for information on how to build one. If your'e like me you've already seen dozens of online videos and websites each having a small piece of the puzzle. I even purchased some videos for around $75 and I learned some good info but then they wanted me to buy their aquaponics kits online. This was just too much for me to afford so this prompted me to find a way to make a quality home system myself so I found some info on "barrel-ponics". This is pretty much aquaponics but using barrels for your fish tank and grow-beds. I really didn't like that idea because it requires you to build special table supports for the barrel halves so that they don't collapse. I wanted something that would last and work just as well as the expensive kits.
To make a long story short, after hundreds of hours of research and development, I was able to build and easily copyable, highly customizable, fully functioning, high-quality aquaponics system for around $300! This means that you can double or even triple the size of your aquaponics system and still spend Thousands less than an online kit.
