MY STORY, MY SOLUTION, YOUR SALVATION

When I was at the end of my rope and couldn't find the help I needed,
I knew there was only one thing left to do and I did it: I developed a
simple system on how to alleviate my own anxiety.

Here's what happened:

I was happily married to my husband Wilson and working as a nurse on
a busy orthopaedic ward. It was a challenging job, but I enjoyed it.
Then I experienced three work place injuries in almost as many years.
The injuries took their toll, but I 'soldiered on.'

Then, one shift, I thought I had torn a muscle in my left forearm
while moving a patient up the bed. I went to see my GP whom sent me
for a test known as an ultrasound because he thought I'd had a bleed
into the muscle belly.

This condition is known as a DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis. But during
the test the radiographer walked into the room and surprised (and
terrified me) with the announcement that he had found 'unusual
calcification on my bone.'

Now you don't need to be Einstein to work out what these doctors were
looking for. Consequently I then had other scans and x-rays not
related to my arm.

Then I was sent back to my GP

'What's going on?' I asked.

'It's not good,' he replied. 'Bella, you have cancer.' I had been
diagnosed with a neo-plastic lesion the doctor's were convinced was
cancerous.

I was shockedand scared.

Two days later I was seeing a specialist oncology orthopaedic surgeon
in Brisbane. After another battery of tests I was diagnosed with
lymphoma. About a week later I was in surgery. After the operation,
the surgeon phoned Wilson with the 'good news':

'It's not cancer!' my doctor told my husband. 'It's an infection.'

The news was good; but not completely. That infection --
streptococcus milleri (or intermediate) strain - had practically
'eaten away' my left ulna bone. So I WAS RELEGATED TO STAYING AT HOME,
WEARING A SPLINT WEIGHING 1.5KILOS, AND DOING NOTHING as the doctors
were fearful that my arm would break.

Although the doctor didn't know if it would initially, given I was a
mature woman, thankfully my ulna bone eventually remodeled or "grew
back."

I thought the worst was over. And about ten months later I tried
going back to work on a graduated return to work program

and found out that the worst was just beginning.

AS SOON AS I WALKED INTO THE WORKPLACE I CRIEDand didn't stop for
about three hours. I was intensively counselled for two of those three
hours, but inconsolable.

I found the experience overwhelming and left. About a week later I
tried going back to work again but only managed to stay for three
hours.

A couple of days later the nightmares started and about 16 months
later I WAS OFFICIALLY DIAGNOSED WITH ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACKS,
POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME AND DEPRESSION.

So one minute I was working on an incredibly busy ward in a public
hospital with people everywhere. The next minute I was home alone and
unable to go back to nursing.

My feelings were overwhelming and paralyzing. I had Wilson, the cat,
the dog and a bunch of horses I was too scared to go near at home to
talk to. I had lost my energy, my libido and almost the will to live.
So I unwittingly PLUNGED INTO THE DARKNESS OF DEPRESSION.

I was down, but not out. I was still fighting.

The first thing I did was to go to the Internet. But here's the thing


I hit 'information overload' pretty quickly because my concentration
wasn't great at that time. And I ended up thoroughly confused

Sound familiar?

There's a lot of fantastic information out there, but it's
scatteredbits and pieces everywhere. And no matter where I looked, I
wasn't able to find a single story where people had really experienced
anxiety or depression for themselves. There was nothing simple out
there that I thought could offer me practical drug-free solution.

Why drug-free? Like many people, I was unable to tolerate the
side-effects of anti-depressant medications that cause everything from
dry mouth and headaches, to vividly disturbing nightmares, interrupted
sleep patterns, and a lowered sex drive.

Now I have finally clawed my way backout of the dark and into the
light of day you might say. And phew let me tell you - what a relief
that is. I owe it all to the love of my family and the encouragement
of my GP, psychiatrist and psychologist.
